Soo sad. I got myself a bark river golok for xmas. used it for 30 min chopping "green" red oak limbs from a tree we had cut down that was near the house. We are talking cutt a limb off the trunk 2-3 inch dia max, then start chopping from the leaves to the base of the limb in 5inch segments on a piece of the trunk for a chopping block.by chopping block i mean piece of stove length trunk turned on end. after 3, 4 foot long limbs i noticed a approx 5mm half moon chip about 4 inches from the point end. sent it back the next day, x mas eve. whoa is me.

i went back and forth whether or not to get a short machette from ontario to go with the 22" one i have had for 15years. you know the kind that don't chip unless you hit rocks. The kind where you can chop limbs for days, maybe weeks on end with out a narry a chip. I mean wtf did my dad have the lock ness monster bless my ontario machette, and then before giving it to me reprofile the edge on a statue of the virgin marry? because let me tell you ladies and gentle men a $49 or how ever much ontario machette flat out will piss all over and then take a huge steaming dump on the BRKT GOLoK in A2 that was sent to my house that i paid $213 for.

Now as a disclaimer the knife was sent back to the parent co. to see what can be done, and it was also requested that either my money be returned or a knife capable of chopping some bitc* as* oak limbs with out chipping be sent back to me.

WTF Is the dang thing designed to whittle balsa or shape florist foam?

Only time will tell.
i keep you posted with the results of either how i spend my 213 dollars or how the new golok performs. Maybe i'll start by chopping some pussy willows first before graduating to a move severe wood.

i'll also include a picture of the chipping sometime.

disclaimer 2 this being my first brkt i have no clue whether they are worth a damn or not. this one was not. hopefully it was a fluke.

Wow that sux. My Bravo 1 has held up great. I've used it pretty hard. Keep us updated.

Sounds like it might be an issue with the heat treat, could really happen with any knife. I can tell you that the Barkie Golok is a beast and under normal circumstances would never chip against wood. I can also assure you that Bark River will happily replace the knife or give you a full refund with no questions asked, their customer service is great. I'd recommend getting the replacement as it's such an awesome tool.

heat-treat. Let 'em make it right. It was a fluke; not a flake.

Give them a chance to make it right. That being said, I'd have gone with a nice Imacasa and called it good. :p

had a few issues...actually my dad bent the blade of my PSK with his thumb nail...now he is a robust fellow but that's pretty bad. Bark River made it right and were very helpful in the end, give em a chance!

Get a Tramontina for $13 and spend the $200 on booze.

Svord Kiwi machete will out chop it and cost you 50 bucks. I am willing to bet Bark River will make it right but I have heard of a good bit of issues with there heat treats.

I'm pretty sure of it isn't the heat-treat!
I had my 1095 Bark River Golok chipped.
The chip was 16 mm long and 4 mm deep and it was right in the middle of the edge.
That wasn't fun, but Mike asked me to send it back under warranty.

The inspection revealed that the edge was ground too thin, according to Mike.
The crew took away a 1/2 oz of steel and sent it back with a new thicker edgegeometry.
The bladeheight is much more narrow, but the Golok chops with better balance and has a fantastic edgeholding!

No problems with the heat-treatment and I think my Golok is a way better tool now, than before the chip.

As a general it seems like BR often make their edges thin off the line and I have made my own thicker edge, when they are that thin.
That's the same with most Mora models too and honestly most new knives regardless of brand needs a personal touch-up on a new edge.

A BR Golok is a lot of steel to "touch-up", so I guess it is best to have it fixed at the BR workshop.

Mikael

:) Get yourself an assortment of good machete's & have a chop off. Get you an Ontario 12" & 18" machete, an Imacasa or 2, a Tramontina or 2 & a Condor or 2. You could buy ALL of those for the same price or less as the BR Golok.

I am an Ontario man myself when it comes to machetes. 20+ years with the 18" & 4 yrs with the 12". No issues. Have chopped wire, trees down, etc. They will shave the hair on your arm. GREAT tool.

Be glad it has the warranty--none of the other knives mentioned in this thread have lifetime no questions asked warranties. Whatever happened you would have to fix them yourself.

Condor and Imacasa have a lifetime warranty.
