New BRKT kepharts are comin!

have you seen this one?

Holy crap - that is gorgeous!

Flashlife - I think you will find the tip on a spearpoint like this quite functional. Its like a much bigger SAK. Because the point is centered, it works much better for drilling. Finally the point of this baby will not snap like an upswept clip point.

Does anyone else dislike the so called "Sharpshooter Sheath Systems Bushcraft Sheath" that is provided with an increasing number of BRKT knives? Personally, I would much prefer a simple pouch sheath with no firesteel loop. I always have a firesteel along in my basic survival kit that goes with me anytime I'm off the pavement.

The "Bushcraft Sheath" is too heavy due to its rectangular profile, which adds leather that serves no function whatsoever. The firesteel loop adds still more unnecessary weight, and the belt slot is too low, which causes the blade to ride too high on the hip.

My preference would be to see a simple pouch sheath offered with an option to add a firesteel loop. Also, I'd prefer to see a belt loop located no lower than the top of the pouch sheath.

Don't get me wrong, I love the bushcraft blades of BRKT, and I own quite a few.

I don't have any experience with the BRKT sheaths but that is one of my pet peeves. It seems nearly every sheath that comes with a knife rides too high for my tastes. I like the top of the handle no higher than the top of my belt and would prefer it lower than that. Kydex sheaths are particularly annoying in that respect. If it's too high you get poked in the side when you sit and it also gets in the way if you try to wear it with a backpack w/hip belt. I think I'm going to have to learn to make my own sheaths.

Not a big fan of the Sharpshooter sheath either. I like the simple sheaths that come with the smaller knives like the Mini-Northstar and EDC Saex much better. The full tang Kepharts do look pretty nice, I was just looking at them myself. Might have to pull the trigger on one anyway this weekend.

My only real problem with the sharpshooter sheath that came with my Aurora is that the knife stabbed through it within about an hour of me getting it. Now, I have to be really careful with the thing. I have been meaning to make a new sheath, but I've just been too busy recently.

Yep, I've already pulled the trigger on the FT Kephart myself. Great knife. Just hate to see that same sheath being provided with so many BRKT models.

Call them up - they'll likely send you a new sheath.

I agree with them riding way to high.

They did make an extender for getting it to ride lower, I use one to get the handle to be below the belt on my backpack.

I think both DLT and Knivesshipfree sell the extender. I made one for myself a while before they started selling them.

The loop for the firesteel is easy to cut off:D

I very much agree with you here. This sheath type is impractical, ends up jabbing you very unpleasantly in the ribs if you sit down (or drive a car)and doesn't hold the knife well (or holds it so you can't withdraw it!).

Yes, I know you can buy a strap to make it hang lower but that costs a good deal extra and in a well designed pouch style sheath you wouldn't have to buy this addition in the first place:grumpy: The firesteel holder is a nuisance in my view, my firesteel stays in my small psk for if I need it.On a sheath it looks awkward and is pointless, making the sheath bulky and ugly.

The BRKT knives are generally very good however.

That is a good idea and I am sure you are right, however there is something I would like to mention that has prevented me from doing this so far: procrastination!

But you are right, I bet they would fire one right off to me. They seem like a good company and I sure do love the knife.

I can relate to the firesteel loop. I've tried it out and found that I don't really like them. Like HDW, I tend to carry my firesteel elsewhere in my pack or on my person. I kind of think the whole firesteel attached to your sheath is a bit too fashionable - but I understand why some like them and some don't. I think all those pictures with with $50 firesteel handles matching the companion knife just makes me a bit queasy (Not that I wouldn't mind having a firesteel that is pretty but it just doesn't ring with my economic sensibilities).

Regarding high riding sheaths, I can't say I mind them. I like those new fangled kydex ones quite a bit. I'm also not exactly one of those slim types, but I certainly don't find they poke my love handles mutch :)

You know what I miss? That little loop at the top of the old sheaths. Perfect for a Baldric. I don't wear leather sheaths on a belt. None of them seem to be "right" for me so I like to be able to slip a Baldric through that little loop. It rides nicer than using a belt loop - especially "high-riding" ones.

Jeff, I hear you on the loop. I have a couple of older Barkie sheaths with that feature and it sure comes in handy. I think the current line of Sharpshooter sheaths are very high quality and Bark River should be commended for including a sheath with their knives. The fire steel loop is designed so that the end user can either utilize it or trim it off at their discretion. Let's face it, pleasing everyone with one sheath design is kind of a Sisyphean task.

That's why it seemed odd to me they would go that route. Very nice stuff, no question. A little bit of a touchy subject too. Mike and Reid went to great lengths to provide the best quality sheath they could with Mike's knives - then come all the "hey, what would REALLY make it nice is...."

My FT Kephart will go in the old JRE that came with my first production run Kephart, so I get what I want on both counts. I have a ULB though that I keep in a crappy old Mini-Northstar "pancake" sheath with the ears cut off.

These look very sweet. I have one with Dark curly maple and red liners on the way. I for one do like the bushcraft sheaths these come with. If you do not like the firesteel loop it is very easy to just cut it off, but it's a lot hader to put one on if they didn't come with it.
