New brown XHP Native...question

I just got a new (dealer exclusive?) brown Native 5 in CTS-XHP. This is my first Native and first pinned knife in general. It's super tight opening and closing. With no torx to play with I don't know what to do about it. I put a drop of M-Pro 7 gun oil in there and it helped a bit but not much. Anyway, my question really is do these usually loosen up over time? Do they loosen up too much; problems with blade play? What have your experiences been? Threw up a few pics of the native with the other users to make this thread a little less boring...

I'd say it'll loosen up over time, but it might take awhile. With pinned construction, they definitely vary. Mine, for example, is free wheeling. If I press the release, the blade will fall to the 90 degree position.

Mine will be here tomorrow. I'll let you know how the action is on mine. Being all pinned construction I'd rather it start off tight than loose. I assume it will break in after a while.

My S35VN Native5 doesn't open very smooth, But a lot of that is the pressure from the lockback. Try holding the lock down while moving the blade. If it is easier than it is the lock causing the drag. If it stays the same then it is a tight pivot. Again, I would rather it be tight than loose with a bunch of blade play.

If you work toothpaste (an abrasive) into the pivot and make it too loose you will have to tighten it with a hammer and drift punch.

If you can open it one handed as is I would just let it break in on its own. You can do the ghetto wave zip tie mod in the meantime.

Jim.

Got the same knife last week and had the same problem in opening it. After reading different threads here talking about problems with tough gritty deployment, I applied a suggestion of flushing with hot soapy water. Did that; used compressed air to dry; a drop of mineral oil on pivot . Now my Native opens smooth like I would expect.

I want one of these so fricking bad!!! I'm jealous of you all!!!

I bought two. One opens real smooth, the other tight. I might give the soap trick a try, but sure it'll work in over time.

Love these knives!

Thank you all for your input. It's just frustrating for me because I'm so used to tinkering with my knives and things to get them the way I like lol. The knife has actually loosened up quite a bit since I first posted this. I put some m-pro 7 in it and blew it through with the air gun at work. That combined with opening and closing it a million times broke it in pretty good. It's still a bit tighter than my Delica but I can open it one handed with my thumb no problem and thats all I really wanted. I definitely agree that I'd rather have it a bit tight than too loose for sure....now if I could just do something about the damn blade centering lol ;)

I forgot to mention that this is the first knife I've had with CTS-XHP and I gotta say it takes a wicked edge, came razor sharp, all I did was put on the strop with some DMT diamond paste and its a light saber now...I'm impressed

The combination of a CLP product and 90+ psi is actually a very good approach. The solvents in the CLP will loosen crud and the air will blow it clean out of the knife.

I got mine and it is very stiff to open, But I know that will break in. The blade is perfectly centered.

The thing that is driving me nuts is trying to flip the pocket clip for left hand carry. I wont budge, like someone went a little crazy with loctite. I've tried everything I have around the house and all I'm doing is damage.

I'm going to make a tool tomorrow at work and give it one more shot. If that doesn't do it I'm sending it back and making KC do it.

I also got my 801 and 700 today. flipping the Rexford and the 700 is the only thing keeping me sane about the stupid pocket clip on the Native. Minus the clip the Native is a really nice knife!

EDIT: Because I know. Pix or it didn't happen.:D

It won't loosen up, it will smooth out. My native was very tight at first, but now it is smooth to open and close (I can depress the lock and swing it open/shut) but still has ABSOLUTELY ZERO play. It is also now my favorite knife. Give it a while (not a couple days) and you will love it. I would totally buy the dealer exclusive brown if the native 5 light weight wasnt coming up ( and I didn't have the normal version in both plain and spyder edge).

I thought I would hate the brown and dye it immediately. But I like it.

And I did get the clip off. RED loctite. Really? I did it without a torch, But it was NOT easy. Red loctite does not belong on knives!!!!

Use it. It'll smooth out over time.
It shall break in. Just like a new handgun, iy loosens up over time as you give it time at the range.

Depends on what kind of OCD types you have taking things apart, wrecking or losing the parts and start complaining about stuff they did while assigning blame on others. ;)

I hear ya, But red loctite on aluminum fasteners is a bad idea IMO. Especially with this type of head. I nearly thrashed it. Blue or purple I totally understand. But RED??

I put a washer that was the same width as the slot in a vise, and then put the mojo on it with the widest flat head on my leatherman.

Enough complaining from me. It's a nice knife, sharp out of the box (scary sharp after a stropping) Good fit and finish. Light and pocket friendly.

I think tomorrow is going to be a five knife day lol.

Jim.

I am glad I know that they used red on the clip.
If I do switch sides I now know to use a flathead with no play and heat it a bit.

I have no idea what brand of thread locking compound Spyderco uses or whether there's and "industry standard" color code for thread locking compounds? Do you?

FWIW, while I haven't received my brown Native yet, I've removed and relocated a couple dozen Spyderco barrel bolt clips over the years and have never damaged a screw head or required anything other than two nickels and a bit of finger moxie to change them over.
