What would you say is the knife that has taken the place of the Buck 110? I'm not talking about replacing it but which knife would you say is the most popular now like the 110 was in the late 80's and 90's. Just some thoughts of a fellow knife nut, I lean toward either the Kershaw Leek or the Blur. Tell me what you think?

The Griptilian would be one possibility as well as a number of offerings from Spyderco (I don't know their specifics as I've never seen a Spyderco that interested me) and there are a number of trendy knives on BF that the general public probably doesn't know. However, almost everyone knows the 110. Well, except liberals...

The biggest issue for me with the 110 is the clip point. I have one which replaced an old one I bought in the 70's and have misplaced but I prefer a more all-around blade in a smaller size. The most popular folder on the planet *should* be the Buck 500 Duke but most guys here probably don't know the knife at all.

I would say something from Kershaw. The main reason is because you can get one cheap and they seem to be sold everywhere. Benchmade is probabaly my favorite brand of knives overall but most the guys I work with won't spend the over $50 price tag they come with. Take in mind I am talking about people who don't really know or care about knives. Just people that know they need a good pocket knife and want one for as cheap as possible, and ain't nothing wrong with that.
I would say top 3 brands of knives I see from the average guy is:
Buck
Kershaw
Gerber
I also see some Spyderco and Benchmade knives but not as many as those first three listed.

That's why it's hard to beat a Buck for the $$. Even the Bantams are pretty decent knives.

I'd say it's still the 110. I would bet it's sales are still strong, and if you throw in the near infinite number of clones you have a knife used in a lot of places.

There are two ways, however, to respond to this:

--which knife best fulfills the role of the all purpose knife?

--which all-purpose knife is the best seller, is more universal?

The op asked "which is the most popular now", so here goes:

As to newcomers, I'd guess the Delica or Griptilian outsell most other offerings from Spyderco/Benchmade/Kershaw.

If overall popularity/sales is the criteria, getting past the saks, I would guess something from Gerber. The big sporting goods chains (with their huge orders and sales) swear by them. Even rEI is big on them.

The Buck Vantage series is what springs to mind for me. Nice slicy hollow grind with one hand opening. Pretty tough too! I've been using my Vantage Force Select for a few weeks now and it's kicked my Tenacious out for a while.

For knife people: Spyderco Paramilitary 2 or Benchmade Griptilian

For non-knife people: Something from Gerber or Smith&Wesson

This is just based on my observations from this forum and from out in the real world. Seems like everyone here carries either a PM2 or a Grip. And most of my co-workers who aren't knife enthusiasts have something they bought from a generic sporting goods store, nowdays usually a "Smith & Wesson".

I agree with the Duke. Top knife 110 w/ drop point S30V blade, 112 w/ drop point S30V blade and the Duke w/ S30V blade. DM

Damn, is that even a 110 anymore? Where can I get something like that????

They were offered in response to the Buck Collectors for a lighter 110 in June 2010. Then again in Dec. 2011 with different handle material. Contact the Buck Collectors: Larry at, loden@dka-online.com
They may have some of the dark wood handled models left which has the same blade as above. DM

In my mind the Spyderco Endura is the modern and improved 110 type knife. The Delica is the 112. My 2 cents.

Your welcome. I've been using mine off and on for many jobs during these 3yrs. and I have no complaints. Good luck. DM

agree to disagree :D to answer to OP, my bet would be a griptilian. All knife nuts aside, I see more griptilians than any other knife.

The Buck 110... you need to ask yourself who actually carried a 110? What was the purpose? The 110 is a big heavy folder. It was a farm and ranch knife; essentially a work knife. I carried a knife similar to the 110 (Schrade) before they went out of business. It was a work knife and a knife I might carry in the woods for general purposes or hunting. But I tended to use a smaller knife for field dressing chores. Honestly, I own a couple Buck 110's, but I don't use them. So how is the 110 "America's knife"?

America's knife was a Case. And Case sells the dickens out of them in many patterns.

I hate to tell you this guys but the 110 has been replaced by the cell phone.

When I was a kid in Northern Maine, farming community, just about EVERY man carried a 110 or similar on their belt.

Nowadays most men I see carry a cell phone or other electronic device on their belt and NO knife.

Sad days these are
Kid Couteau

The Buck 110 revolutionized the knife industry and was copied around the world. Next to the Swiss Army Knife, it is one of the most recognizable knife designs. Has something like that come along since? I don't think so.
