New Buck 110?

Kid, there is way too much junk to carry around in your pockets or on your belt these days.

I don't think there is any one model from any manufacturer that will enjoy the dominance of the market like Buck's 110 did. Around '68, I started noticing more and more of them on belts. I started in the trades in '72, and about 1 in 10 carried a 110. They also used this same knife for hunting, fishing and camping as it was "the knife".

By the end of the 70's, probably 20% of the workers across the trades had a Buck 110. Maybe more. They were everywhere, known for their utility value and price point. I think the height of their job site dominance was probably somewhere in the 80s. By then, police, fireman, and all kinds of other folks besides construction guys, hunters and fishermen were carrying them.

I don't think any one knife will ever wear the crown that they did in their hey day. They were e everywhere.

Now there are so many manufacturers that make more specialized knifes that will do the same thing. I have about four knives that will work as well as the Buck 110, but are lighter and don't require a belt sheath. Same money as the 110, but more useful blade shapes and handle shapes, not to mention the weight issue.

Maybe not the Wave, specifically, but the Leatherman multi-tool is a very good call.

Right on the spot. The same people (outdoors men, farmers, ranchers, workers and military men) that wore a 110 on their belts now sport a multitool, usually a wave,or Gerber.

I carry a large multi-tool as well at times. The Surge. No style just functional. Still, at last reading Buck was closing in on the 5 million mark for sales with their 110. Very few knife models will come close to that. Guys, are desiring so many different features with a knife now days. DM

I hate to tell you this guys but the 110 has been replaced by the cell phone.

When I was a kid in Northern Maine, farming community, just about EVERY man carried a 110 or similar on their belt.

Nowadays most men I see carry a cell phone or other electronic device on their belt and NO knife.

Sad days these are

Make sure you are checking their pockets for a clip, Kid. I carried a sheath knife for years, and yes a Buck 110 was one of them (automatic version). But now I carry a knife clipped to both my left and right front pocket. And yes, a cell phone is generally the only thing visible on my belt, although a gun will be carried concealed on my right hip.

The knives I carry currently have black clips, and when worn with black jeans are pretty low profile. So all you might see is a cell phone. Rest assured there's a lot more you cannot, or just don't see,

Hell, I used to also carry a leatherman on my belt. But the one I carry now has a black clip and is usually in my left rear pocket under the cell phone.

Wow great thread!! I don't think any knife will take its place. Back in the day there was only so many choices, today a guy or gal has unlimited choices! My guess tho would be a gerber or spyderco. Or case brand. Not so much a certain model but brand. To many options from all companies. I enjoy this thread

In my mind the Spyderco Endura is the modern and improved 110 type knife. The Delica is the 112. My 2 cents.
Jim

I'll agree with this 100%. The Endura/Delica came out in 1990 and was unique at that time. This is before all the "tactical" folder craze we have now.

As for 110's, here's mine. Only one I currently own. Cumberland Knife Works auto conversion.
