new BUCK COMPADRE series

The red is powdercoat over 5160 spring steel. Some aid to keep the rust at bay between cleanings/oilings/re-paintings. The handles are stable heritage walnut diamondwood.

This line brings back memories of my dad's tools. Which were painted, he painted the steel, for rust prevention, easy recognition as his and notice to the borrower that they were not theirs and that they were to be returned at some point to their appointed place over the garage workbench. Dear dad.

I wasn't too stoked when the Reaper and the Thug came out because of the recurve on the edge. Again, this camp knife looks promising despite the aesthetics of the red stuff.

My first reaction was there awful, however once I got past the paint and really looked I liked what I saw

Buck needs a brand manager, someone who knows the industry and its trends. Those are ridiculous.

^^This^^

Paint aside, I don't understand why Buck is putting a hollow grind on a full tang woods knife. Makes perfect sense on their hunting knives but on a general purpose woods knife, not so much. The Reaper and Endeavor are other examples of this. Buck has (mostly) managed to not screw up Ron Hood's flat grind designs but at heart, I think Buck is a hunting knife company, which is not the same as an outdoors knife company.

Note, I'm not anti-hollow grind. They have their place - on hunting knives. But I don't need my hunting knife to be full tang and for a general purpose woods knife, a flat, saber or shallow convex grind is more versatile, imo.

Reaper - grind makes no sense to me.

Endeavor - grind makes no sense to me.

Im hard pressed to find uglier knives in the market that Buck makes, besides their classic knives. Just what the hell??!

Back in Scouts, I was given a Bridgeport hatchet with a red paint job. This made it easy to find when set down. The red gradually wore off on the business end of the head, but it always looked dorky to me.

Me too.
