It looks like it will be this design in two sizes.

From Equipped:
Tom Mayo has designed another series of folders for Buck, the Cutback ($44) and Hilo ($50). Both are satin finish frame locks with a contoured stainless steel frame, drilled with a single line of Mayo's signature lightening holes down the center. A wee bit of flare at the forward end may keep your fingers off the sharp edge of the blade. The one hand opening drop point blade is of 440C stainless, 3.25 inches (83 mm) and 3.625 (91 mm) long, respectively, with a little bit of recurve to it. Overall length and weight is 4.125 inches (104 mm) and 3.3 ounces (92 g) and 4.5 inches (114 mm) and 4 ounces (114 g). The removable clip is also stainless; there’s no lanyard hole.

And now for the important questions:
When can we get them?
And will there be a premium version of either of them?

Woodcha Lookatdat :D
Seems as though someone is paying attention to Ergonomics.
My next purchase I'm sure
I hope the Bos name is on it too.

And will there be a premium version of either of them?

PLEASE say yes, PLEASE say yes, PLEASE say yes!!!!

These look cool and I will probably buy both but I am REALLY hoping that Buck will come out with another higher end titanium version :)

Thinking about it, this is Bucks equivilant to the Vapor. But like we have all said, here is hoping for a higher end one.

Count me OUT. No Chinese Buck's for me. Hell, Chinese anything, for that matter. :barf: :barf: :barf:

I doubt that. While I admire your sense of patriotism, saying no Chinese anything is more than likely impossible. Even the keyboard you are currently typing on is most likely made in China. I bet half the things in your home have made in China on them and you never even noticed.

I am with you in the fact that I do not generally purchase cutlery made overseas, but to say No Chinese anything is more of a daydream than a reality unfortunately.

Yeap, just picked up my Microsoft optical mouse. Made in China :( My Dell keyboard is made in Thailand

Truth is, looks like my house probably has more products from overseas than made here in the US. Now as far as Buck having these made in China as stated above I am really hoping they come out with a higher end model made here in the states, but I fully understand what section of the market these models are made to fill. Buck will supply these to every Wal-Mart in the country and they will be competing with knives such as the Kershaw Vapor IIs and Gerber Gators and such. In order to bring in a model at that price point, it is necessary to produce these goods as cheap as possible in order to be competitive.

I have read many times before from Buck, Spyderco and Benchmade. In order to continue producing models made here in the US they must remain competitive and offer some lower end models that are outsourced. Although I don't like it I can understand the need

A higher end version? They're called the Northshore and TNT! The Buck TNT with Ti and S30V is certainly a fitting higher end offering from Buck. Mine rocks!

Then if you really want a different higher end offering, lat I heard, Tom wasn't dead yet and is still making customs:)

John

I understand only the Mayo/TNT is made in the USA.

(If you're looking for high-end, it's a super knife)

Those of us that own a 172 were hoping for a larger version perhaps??

While Tom is not dead and still making customs, he is not accepting orders
:(

Yeah, I know. I have a 172 and would like to see a bigger version, but I don't know how successful that model has been for Buck. Most of America looks at a $300.00 price tag on a pocket knife as a joke. The new ones should be a great hit for Buck, especially with Wal Mart distributing them.

I know Tom's no longer accepting orders, I think i got in just under the wire for my large recurve, and I still had to wait a year, but it is SWEEEET!

John

ill probly be getting this knife, i really like 440c as a blade steel, stainless frame cant be that bad

and the cutting geometry of a recurve is sweet, hopefully the blade is nice and thin on this bad boy .

Lucky -------!!! :)

I am curious what sold better, the 172 or the 173

I'd rather be lucky than good any day ;)

You pose an interesting question. I know in the knife knut circles, there's been plenty of discussion about the 172 and almost nothing about the 173. It's like it was neither Fish not Fowl. It wasn't high end enough for most of us types, but was too high end for most of America. Thinking about it, that's the perfect equation for a nice long term collectable! It might be like an Edsel. Nobody could figure it out so they sold few and now many years later there's a small group who will pay a good bit for a nice example.

hmmm.....

John

i have a 172 and like to buy American when i can. these days, thats hard to do. i will pick up the new Mayo because i love the looks of these knives! 440c will be just fine with me, even after using S30V. I'm sure the heat treat will be good too. ;)

it would be nice to have an ETA on them. if not, the poor person working in the sporting goods dept. is gonna git tired of me visiting and calling!! ;)
