New Buck/Mayo

I doubt that. While I admire your sense of patriotism, saying no Chinese anything is more than likely impossible. Even the keyboard you are currently typing on is most likely made in China. I bet half the things in your home have made in China on them and you never even noticed.

I am with you in the fact that I do not generally purchase cutlery made overseas, but to say No Chinese anything is more of a daydream than a reality unfortunately.

Yeap, just picked up my Microsoft optical mouse. Made in China :( My Dell keyboard is made in Thailand

Truth is, looks like my house probably has more products from overseas than made here in the US. Now as far as Buck having these made in China as stated above I am really hoping they come out with a higher end model made here in the states, but I fully understand what section of the market these models are made to fill. Buck will supply these to every Wal-Mart in the country and they will be competing with knives such as the Kershaw Vapor IIs and Gerber Gators and such. In order to bring in a model at that price point, it is necessary to produce these goods as cheap as possible in order to be competitive.

I have read many times before from Buck, Spyderco and Benchmade. In order to continue producing models made here in the US they must remain competitive and offer some lower end models that are outsourced. Although I don't like it I can understand the need

Well, that's a bet you'll lose. Believe me, I look & I notice. And if you make Walmart your primary place for shopping, then made in China is what you're gonna have in your house. I don't. The 1st thing I do when buying anything is to see where it's made. While I agree it's very difficult (& sad) finding made in USA products anymore, it can be done if you look for them. Made in USA knives? I don't have any problem finding them. This thread alone illustrates what the problem is. Here's a Buck that's made in China, being raved about. While it may be good knife, fact of the matter is, I can buy any # of USA made knives if I choose. Thankfully, that still can be easily done. A car, clothes, keyboard, TV, yeah, I'll agree with ya on that. But a knife? No way. Chinese made knives....no thanks. I'll buy American made as long as they're offered. And that was the jist of my point. When the choice can be made for buying American, I'll do it everytime. (provided of course, the quality is there) But many people don't. Instead, they'll just look for the cheapest price they can find.

"American's know the price of everything, & the value of nothing" :(

You have a point.

For the longest time I bought American cars..............mostly Fords

They usually lasted about 120,000 miles before things began to break.

Now I buy Toyotas........they usually last twice as long as the Fords did.

They cost a little more, but I get a lot more value for my money.

When Ford starts making a car as good as Toyota, for the same price, I will go back to Ford products.

Its my money...........and as much as I love America (I am a vietnam vet and third generation veteran of foreign wars), I want to have some left over when I get old.

PS.....if you have a computer..........almost all the parts are Chinese......

if they werent, it would have cost you about 5x as much!!!!!

Couldn't agree with you more on getting the most for your $. Especially with cars & their cost. I'm not gonna be a hypocrite & say I haven't chosen foreign made products. I wouldn't touch US built cars in the mid to late 70's or 80's because they we're junk....nothing but problems. I drove Honda's because I refused to put my hard earned $ in something that would cause nothing but headaches. The competition from the Japanese finally woke up the Big 3 to produce quality vehicles again. I said all along, when they start making quality US cars again, I'll go back to them. And I did in '96 & have been there (with Ford) since. Although from what I'm seeing, the QC is slipping again on the Big 3. And if that trend continues, I'll go back to Honda or Toyota. As I stated in my last post, I'll buy American everytime when given the choice, as long as, & provided, the quality is there. I won't buy Made in USA if the product is junk. If it is, then I'll look at foreign made if I have to. After all, there are well made knives from Germany, Japan, Spain......
My point with the knives being, I feel there's still plenty of good, quality (& affordable) USA made knives that doesn't necessitate my looking at foreign made ones. Especially from China. We can only hope & pray that trend continues. Long term, I have my doubts.

Well, at least Buck is going to put out a larger Mayo. I'd also hoped for a Ti/S30V version but I suppose I'll take what I can get. I like the look of this design a lot. At the very least I'd like to see them put S30V steel in the blade. The Ti would be good for lightening it up. That's the only real reason I like Ti... tough and light.

I day last week I looked at a buck-Mayo and as I was looking it over saw that was made in China I handed it back to the sales person and said no I'm not buy a Buck knife made in China. I don't under stand the American mentality.Buy American When you can and help stop making the US a third rate power!
You can not remain a super power without Manufacturing

Fair competition does. Government subsidized manufacturing and costs held artificially below anything possible in a free market economy is not fair. It is intended grab as much market share as possible to drive under the competition. Spend your money as you see fit but don't delude yourself to the consequences.

These bad boys are already at knife retailers...Grand Prarie had them on Saturday :p :p :p
Matt

I can see what's wrong with subsidizing.. Hell, NYC's subway latest cars are made in Canada and from a Japanese firm. Used to be all American, St Louis Car Co, Budd, Pullman

None of the online photos I can find show/or mention if the Buck Hilo has ambidextrous thumbstuds??

A southpaw needs to know?

except for the ones at the beginning of this thread, which I now see when I looked at them again.......brain malfunction!

The Cutbacks (model #174) and the Hilos (model #179) are in stock right now. Dealers can order them. Walmart does not upgrade it's selection until July this year. They did an emergency reconfiguration following Schrade's closure. Walmart will be putting in the #174.

We are focused on managing our relationships in China as well as we manage our relationships with vendors here in the states. We get good work out of our vendors or we do not use them anymore. These knives prove out both metallurgically as well as ergonomically. The stainless sides are slim and good bearing surfaces so the action is tight but free. Blade of 440C at 58RC...speaks for itself.

Tom does make this stuff look really good.

It figures Walmart will stock the smaller one....dang it.

Please say it will be a plain edge.....They have this thing for serrated edges....ugh.
