Hey guys, I got a new 55 today and a 113 a couple weeks ago (they were ordered) and both have different scales than I'm used to. They have an untreated walnut instead of the usual diamond wood with a polished finish. I'd post a picture, but my camera is not working right now. Anyway, the wood is pretty cool looking and I like it, I was just wondering if anyone else has gotten something similar recently...

Last year I picked up a 113 with walnut.

J D Bear, where are you located in South Jersey? I lived there for four years about 55-60 years ago.

At first I didn't know what to think about it, but it grew on me and I dig it. When I got the 55 with the same wood, I didn't know if it was an ongoing thing. I'm wondering what other models might be coming with the walnut.

Is it actually "walnut" or walnut colored dymondwood?

I really wish I could take a picture for you. The color is similar, but there is no sheen like on a recent 110 or 112. Even an older 113 for that matter. No clear coat at all. Like I said, it's pretty cool and looks rustic, but just not the same...

I have a few Bucks that the COA's say Walnut.
But I doubt seriously if they are un-treated.
Can't see Buck putting out something un-treated.
Others here will know more about Bucks wood treating.

I'm saying it looks untreated, not that it isn't. Just trying to describe what it looks like because I've never seen it before. I looked at plenty of pictures and videos before buying it because I have big hands and didn't know if the size would work. It wasn't expensive, but I don't have money to throw around. Point is, I've never seen one that didn't have the glossy finish on it.

I just did an online chat with some Buck person. Said Dymondwood.
Questioned the ones with COA's I have that say Walnut. Dymondwood also.

The unfinished look sounds cool.

Look forward to your pics.

I know what you mean JD Bear. I believe the 113 and 055 handles were changed to Walnut in 2015 (according to the catalogs) from Macassar Ebony Dymondwood. In my opinion it is not Walnut Dymondwood but natural walnut. It does have a very matte finish compared to the Ebony Dymondwood handles. Here's a picture of my 055 with walnut handles. It appears to have really nice cross-cut grain. I would love to see this wood on more of Buck's knives.

Best,
Matthew

There ya go! Thanks Matthew. I'd like to see more models with that too. 110, 112, 301 would all be cool with that....

I think it looks like a piece of old deck board.

As a side note, I went to try and find it on the web and ran into several stories about the Dymondwood facility (Rutland Plywood) recently burning down. A some talk that they would not rebuild the plant but might 'out-source' the manufacturing of Dymondwood. (? Overtheocean). Just FYI. 300

And the 300 sense of humor pops in...:D

I was thinking picket fence..

Love the old antique look.

I'll be lookin for one, if the member of my local Buck anon dont catch me. Hopefully she is downstairs cookin dinner..

It's got a nice feel too. Like I said I was surprised by the different wood, but it has grown on me. I'll definitely get a 110 and 112 if they make them like that.

I live in Stratford and work in Cherry Hill. I was in Delaware for a long time before I moved here. It's been about 5 years for me and I'm still getting used to it...

I like the walnut on my 55 too. It's real as far as I can tell.

So, walnut is standard on the 113 now? I know the custom shop has a Heritage Walnut. I wonder if that is the same thing?

I live in Stratford and work in Cherry Hill.

I wasn't far from there many, many years ago. My family moved to Haddonfield when I started high school, but I never really adjusted to the east coast. After high school I went to Wyoming.

The finish on my 113 isn't anything special and I keep thinking I will strip it and put on either an oil or beeswax finish.

I work right next to Haddonfield. I go through there every day on the ride in and back home. It's a nice little town.

I read a review on the 113 before I got it and the guy thought it was a flaw since he was expecting the dymondwood. Then I got mine and it was the same way but I like it. I'm a fan of wood handles on anything so the "real" wood look and feel are right up my alley.
