New Bushcraft Knife Design

Not too shabby looking.

But not sure the 'subhilt' design is optimal for bushcraft, as it looks like it might 'lock' the hand in the handle....at least more than a non-subhilt design would.

Now as a subhilt pig sticker on the other hand.........:D

Personally I love it. I think the handle would actually work well on bushcraft tasks, if you're willing to use a "locked in" grip. It's a nice knife!

Anything that comes out of Boise is OK in my book.

Maybe I don't really know what a subhilt knife is, but to me it looks like you have a choil on this for a more forward grip and in a normal grip your pointer finger would be behind the "subhilt". Looks like a very flexible design to me.

Is there an advantage to having the blade drop down below the handle? Personally I think it would tend to put pressure on the wrist, more so than a knife with a blade that is more in line with the handle.

Thank you all for the input, here is an even newer version I've just completed.

I suppose I'm also confused on how the term sub-hilt is being used. The knife does in fact have enough handle for a forward and rearward grip of the hilt. Draw cuts and the like are very doable.

onojoe - Yes, Boise is a good place to be for a knife guy!

Oh, I like this revised version quite a bit! It's actually very similar to my ideal knife profile - modified sheepsfoot. Loads of belly with a raised handle relative to the spine of the blade. See: CRKT Eraser, Strider / Mah EF:

I like it more and more every time I see it and it was instantly appealing to my eye. Nice job. I'd love to put on thru a good long hike/camp session. I'd also like a smaller version as well I think. Good luck & keep em coming!

I think I'd like to do a pass around at some point. I'll make sure to post on this thread when I decide to do that!

Thank you all for the compliments, I'm having a lot of fun with this project. I am starting on a folder now too!

I'd have to be last cause I wouldn't wanna give it back. Folder similar in style paints a cool pic in my eye. Good luck with your endeavors. Looking forward to seeing your efforts.

Looks nice! I'm not a huge finger groove/choil person. I do a lot of cuts using a reverse grip so they tend to be very unpleasant creating hotspots in the web of my hand.

Just an update folks. Here's the latest iteration of this design. Custom Kydex from Mashed Cat Outfitters.
