Hi Scott -
I am not an expert photographer, but I do enjoy taking pictures of my knives, just as you are doing.
I read a lot on this site about how to make a light-box, and there are many ways to accomplish this, including just buying one from ebay.
I chose to go the cheapest route and make a light-box out of a large cardboard box.
I cut two sides and the top out of the box, leaving a "frame". I reinforced the corners with dowel rods, and taped white tissue paper, the kind that comes in boxes with shirts at Christmastime.
I lined the box with a piece of white poster board that I bought three pieces for 88 cents.
For lighting, I used three clamp-on lights that you can buy at Lowes/Menards/Home Depot for around $6 each, and I use "daylight" bulbs in the fixtures.
Here is a link to my thread with pictures of the box and more detail of how it was built.

Read your camera manual and see if you can find any aperature priority mode where you can stop the camera down (make the aperature setting a bigger number, which makes the aperature smaller and will give you better depth of field - more stuff in your picture will be in sharp focus.)
best regards -
