new camp blade?

i'm looking for a new camp blade.

i generally carry a BRKT bravo1 that has had the thumbramp removed. in addition to that, i usually carry either a BRKT golok or GB sfa. for smaller chores i edc a sak farmer.

i'm looking for something to use as a general purpose, all around camp knife. something that i won't necessarily need to carry the golok or sfa. probably around a 7" blade. i'm not big on real thick blades, and if it's thick (.25") it needs to have good geometry to be able to slice well. everything in life is a compromise and knives are no different, but i'm looking for a good combination of strength, chopping ability, reasonable weight for all-day carry, slicing for kitchen duty, and ease with other general camp chores.

as usual, pics and links are greatly appreciated, along with personal opinions/comparisons to other blades you've tried.

thanks

I’d look at the BRK&T Canadian Camp Knife.

Just shy of a 7” blade and great geometry; a real slicer.

Here’s a picture of it with the Bay de Noc Camp Knife and the Rogue Bowie.

I've yet to find a camp blade I like any better than my ratweiler -

It's shaving sharp, I can beat the hell out of it and, it chops like a 9" or 10" blade.

forgot to mention (and nothing against those that like 'em), but i don't care for blade coatings. i know they can stripped and have done it before but would rather have a naked blade to start.

big mike, i hear you on the canadian camp. i've been eyeing the hudson bay too. but figured i'd see what else is out there. nice pic too!

The Hudson Bay is a great knife.

I just use mine more as a heavy chopper then an all purpose camp tool.

I like the Canadians finesse for food prep and more intricate work while still handling chopping and baton work with ease.

Another plus is the .187” A2 thick steel is quite a bit thinner then the .215” material used in the Hudson Bay or Rogue Bowie.

Note: The Bay de Noc also uses the .187” thick A2.

Also, Koyote makes some awesome thin blades that are plenty tough enough to meet your criteria.

If you can still get 'em, the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp would meet your requirements. I had M.S. make me an golok with an 8" blade which makes a neat camp knife, but is limited for all around use.

pardon the ignorance but what/who is a JK?

big mike. so i guess the hudson is a bit heavier than the canadian? maybe a bit too heavy for a do it all type. i like the canadian and the rogue but was wondering about chopping ability.

JK Knives are made by bladeforums member "Stomper."

His website is www.jkhandmadeknives.com

If you poke around a bit here you will see his work is pretty popular. A lot of guys have knives from him and I've yet to see anyone who is unhappy with one. Take a peak at his website, the Scout model is listed under "Tactical knives" but would make an awesome camp knife.

His designs are simple and rugged, prices are at or lower than his competitors (including factory knives) and having something handmade is just plain cool...

a leuku might fill the bill nicely. ragnar has a few of them. i have a stromeng leuku and really like it for one knife scenarios.

Out of the ones I have and used,

Fehrman First Strike
BR Candian Camp
Beker BK7 (new kabar version looks good, but coated)

Also

BR Bravo2
RC6 (coated, but looks to be a very good all rounder)
Several from the Busse family

He has a few larger chopper types as well that would be ideal for the requirements you talked about. The link below is his camp chopper.
