Hi again folks-

I just picked up a really neat new gun for the backwoods that I wanted to share:

Its a Mossberg 500 12 ga., 5+1. Very, very lightweight compared to my decked out 870, and very simple! I really love this thing so far. I got the shotgun, 50 rounds of federal buckshot, some slugs and the bandoleer, and some pepper spray, for less than $300! The bandoleer pouches each hold 5 rounds of ammo perfectly, and will also hold an Altoids PSK with some room to spare. Perfect for grab and go!

With Heavy Bowie:

Versus 870 (has sidesaddle, temporarily lacks the surefire forend it usually wears):

Thanks for looking gang!

Got a favorite woods longarm you'd like to share?

Nice pair of guns you got there. All I own (personally and not "family" owned) is my Henry .22 lever action. I feel sorry for the birds and squirrels in your neck of the woods :D.

Spooky,

Is this the heavy walled barrel model? I remember when Mossberg sold the 500 military. I really liked the feel of the shotgun and almost bought it. Couldn't see getting a different shotgun platform in addition to my beloved Remington 870s.

Nice set up! I like the bandoleer idea. Very discreet carry.

Nice Job Spook. I have favored the Mossbergs forever, did you already replace the safety with a steel one?

K Estela-This is the 590 Mili model w/ a speed stock and dog ears.

The other day in a sporting goods store I noticed the NEF Pardner Protector. It is essentially an 870 clone with an 18.5" barrel, 5+1 magazine, and synthetic stock. The price was a mere $169 so I figured it was prbably junk. However, I read quite a few reviews that said otherwise. I might get one to stick under the bed.

Thanks guys!

estela- I've not dissected the various models of Mossberg yet, but I'd venture to say that this likely isn't the heavy barreled model. It carries very well, though. I'm a big fan of the feel of my 870's, but the weight is a little more than I wanted in the woods. Just lazy I guess!

Chef- Good lookin' gun! My dad had that model, surprisingly light also for its size. Haven't swapped mine for the metal safety, but I'm seeing where it would feel a lot smoother. This'll do for a user for now, though.

That gun is made in china but i have read good reviews on it also. I bought a magtech pump several years ago for less than $200.00 and it was a darn good gun but i sold it because i love remingtons and winchesters and just couldn't stand toting a gun that said made in brazil. Wish i woulda' kept it

nice looking gun.... i have always loved those mossbergs... i have an old 20 gauge that i got when i was in 8th grade....:)

Nice KISS trombone gun you have there.

My shotty of choice is a Rem 870 Police. The 870 is heavier because it uses a steel receiver, the Mossbergs is aluminum.

I've hefted the tricked out shotties and they just don't handle as well.
Plus I got the 870P for $125!

Nice choice, Hard to go wrong with a mossberg. although the 870 is also a great choice, plenty of furnature and hardware options for both.

I also prefer the Mossberg due to it being much lighter than an all-steel shotgun like the 870. The Browning BPS is light also. Both use allow receivers. I also prefer the Mossbergs much more user friendly controls (safety and action lever).

If you're looking for a bargain, I'd probably buy the Mossberg Maverick over the Chinese 870 copy. http://www.maverickarms.com/ I see them in the $160 range from time to time. The Maverick has controls similar to the 870 though. That's either a positive or a negative depending on your outlook, I guess.

Nice gun...

I like the idea of clip bandoleer to carry extra shells...

Could you tell me more about it? Is it 223 or 308? I can't tell from the pic...

Thanks for your reply,

Frog.

nice gun. i have an 870 express with all the choke tubes and slug barrel but found myself breaking out my old new england 12 gauge that i got when i was 14 or so to hunt with this year. it suprised me how much fun i had with it. being light and handy is a big plus.

As far as its original intended purpose, I couldn't tell you. I pulled it out of a bargain bin at the shop. The pouches allow about 1/2" of good clearance past the size of the Altoid tin I put in, if that helps give anther idea of the pouch size. It's just a strap tagged onto 5 consecutive, separated pouches. It doesn't seem, to my eyes, to be made for any specific magazines that are common, but happens to hold shotshells quite well.

It might hold the 15 rnd mags, but the height might be off. Of course, it may just be to hold some rounds on stripper clips. Either way, works well for this purpose! Probably going to go buy another.

Nice Mossie! I like that the Mossie's have double extractors.
