Here is my new camp hatchet. It is an Estwing. It is forged one piece tool steel and as you can see I could not wait for pictures to give it a try. I am not sure what type of steel it is, I went to look at their website and all it says is forged tool steel. The handle design is awesome as well. Doug

Every time I go to the hardware store I eye these hatchets. Looking forward to hear your thoughts on it after some use.

Think it woud stand up to splitting use by batoning it through logs?

I have no dought that it will hold up. My dad bought one when I was a kid and we used it a lot during our family camping trips. We used it for years, I am not sure but my father still may have it. He got it in the early 60's.

They chop really well. I have had one just like it for 30 years or more. Great tools. I have the full size one as well.

On a recent vacation a friend of mine gave me one of these but like an ass I left it in his car before I flew home. Never really got a chance to test it out only a few chops at a couple of branches but it bit into the wood ok. The factory edge was a quite fat though so I think it would've needed a bit of reprofiling.

I've had one for years too....still going strong. They're a good investment Doug . I have always wanted to try their Axe out.

- regards

Classic design. Bulletproof.

Best of luck with it.

I went back and forth deciding between a nice hatchet like the Estwing and a Woodmans Pal about 3 years ago. I decided on the Woodmans Pal and I am very happy with the choice, however I wouldn't say it is "better", just "different"

yes. Its a brutally tough well made hatchet. My dad used one for log cabin notching for years, as well as used the back to drive 12" log spikes into cabin frames.
