New Camping companion.

Very nice Jim! Let's hear some audio of a round echoing down the canyon!

I'm in the market for a .270 myself.

I Ordered a new 270 today as well. Its a Remington SPS. I love the 270 and this one may be my last rifle as hunting is getting harder each year for us not so young guys.

Nine rounds of 45-70 should stop anything.:D

I would love a 45-70, but you have to handload ammo, correct?
At the moment I don't have the means, maybe someday.

Factory loads are readily available for the 45-70. Most are light [but very effective on deer] but some are very potent like those from Garrett or Buffalo Bore etc. I use the Win 300 Partition at 1850 which duplicates a load they had 100 years ago ! The Marlin should get 1.5" groups, my 1885 Browning easliy gets 1" or better. The Nosler Partition gives much better penetration than the other 300 Gr bullets. The Marlin won't do well with 500 gr due to feeding problems. Remember that the effectiveness of the 45-70 is NOT velocity but making a big hole [" What are you using , a cannon ?? " ] Happiness is a warm 45-70 !

The loudest rifle I had 'felt' for some years when in a firing lane next to it was a Marlin .45-70 Guide Gun - they were all once ported. I wanted a non-ported SS - like they now make. I thought it would be a great protector from the likes of polar bears and grizzlies, admittedly not much of a problem here - unless you visit the zoo. After yesterday's events, where a tiger mauled three, killing one, in a CA zoo, that rationale may be even more viable. Anyway, I bought this Puma 1892 24" octagon SS in .45 Colt, like the 625MG in the picture, over five years ago. With my homebrews, the 255gr LSWC, making 1,000 fps at the muzzle, can pling a 12" steel plate at 110 yd 100% with just about anyone shooting it - that Marbles tang mounted peep sight is quite good. Even with it's steel buttplate, anyone can shoot it without getting hurt - like my .45-70's would! You've whetted my interest once again for that .45-70. Sadly, when I sold the last one, I gave away all of my empties, as I thought I'd never need them again. Reloading is fun... more to spend? No, remember the loud boom - and the whack...

Nice rifle!

I have had one in Blue for a couple of years ( the non ported Mdl) and I really love it. I buy commercial Ammo but also reload when I have time. I tried some 500 grain ammo in it and it is wicked on the shoulder. I use the 500 grain in my Ruger # 1 and there is no problem in that cannon. You made a great choice. I will be getting a SS model pretty soon.

Noise should not be a real problem with this one as iit has a much longer barrel than the guide gun or regular 1895 models. I load the 405 grain hard cast bullets for most things. The Nosler Partition is probably the best all around load I have some 500 Grain Barnes X bullets that are Semi pointed. These will feed through the Marlin. Trouble is I think Barnes quit making them. They were structured for the 45-70 velocities. I have a few 45-70 that I still shoot black powder through.

This one is not ported as a real Cowboy wouldn't have such a device,:):D

You guys are lucky to be able to carry a rifle camping. Here we can only carry a handgun, and only if it's concealed and you have a CCW *and* assuming it's in a state park (not national).

I love .45-70s and I love Marlins. Mine is the standard 22" 1895. They are sweet rifles, can kill anything that walks and yet doesn't destroy as much meat as higher-velocity cartridges.

I bought a 450 marlin. What a monster to shoot! When you gather a group of people behind you at the range, you know somethings up :-)
After my ago settled down, I sold it and bought a Springfield SOCOM 16 in .308
Now I enjoy shooting again!

I purchased a 450 Marlin a few years back. Shot it twice and gave it to my father in exchange for a Kimber he had. I admit, that rifle was an impulse buy from hell. Worked out well in the end though. I like a lot of the other Marlin lever-action rifles, but that one was a no-go.

i love my marlin 45-70, they are so versatile that you can also shoot .410 shells out of them:D
