Beat ya, mine went out yesterday! Hopefully I will have it tomorrow. I am planning on cord wrapping the handle and taking it with me hunting Saturday.

I will try to get some pictures of it in use in the woods, killing time, while I'm not seeing any deer!

I got mine today. It is the Carbon steel 1095 version. The blade is a bit thinker than I thought originally.

The factory edge isn't that sharp out of the box. But with a lottle touch on the sharpening rod is fine.

I think I like the original version better because of that it is slightly thiner. I think thin is good for sliding. Especially this small knife, the cutting performance is more important.

Anyway, it is still a good knife. Very durable. However, it would be much better, if the knife is 2/3 thiner than this.

I got the San Mei version a couple weeks ago. I had an original and foolishly sold it. I love the design of the knife but hate the new sheath. It has too much material and not enough eyelet holes. I plan on making a slim leather sheath for mine. I like the thickness. I always have a pocket knife with me that can do the slicing and leave this baby for the bigger tasks. Like mentioned earlier, this knives need a little bit of sharpening. The first Becker I got was one of the sharpest out of the box knives I've bought. I plan on making a slim leather sheath for mine. The carbon blade is a good buy. I liked the San Mei and paid the premium.

I have found the bottle opener to work very well!

my new becker arrived wednsday and i can say Ka-Bar did a good job.mine has a good working edge from the factory iv've got the bald patches on my arm to prove it lol
the new becker is a tiny bit thicker but Ka-Bar went with a full flat grind on the blade with a V edge as opposed to camillius version with the high saber grind.so it my prove to be a better slicer, at least in the kitchen or with game.
over all I like it. and it is well worth the price. the sheath is another story, 1/3 larger than my old bk-11 sheath and kind of one size fits all with the tanto profile on the sheath.
its well made it works. just not for me YMMV:)
I think Ka-Bar did a good job with Mr.Beckers knife and they will sell many of them I know i'll be ordering a few more:thumbup:

thickness
Cam Bk-11 .150 aprox.
Ka Bk-11 .170 " "

Got mine yesterday and I like the others have said, the knife is great, but the sheath sucks. It's too big and you have to practically rip the thing off your neck to get the knife out. A much smaller, molded kydex (not injection molded) sheath would really help this knife, but for the price it's still a good deal. I will be making a new sheath for it though.

This thread needs pics!
Anybody have a Camillus and a Ka-bar Becker Necker?
Side by side pics would be awesome!

Hey halfcocked....

Please bear in mind that when Paul designed the sheath that the ability to use the TDI clip was one of the design criteria...The clip multiplies carry options.....I have found that the new sheath is more secure(OK harder to get out) but if you use your thumb as an assist it comes out quite readily....There is a fine line between easy removal and reasonable security and it will ease up a bit after a break-in period....I have been wearing this sheath a lot for almost a year now and really do not notice it much more than the original....Please give it a little time and then let me know how it goes....

All Best...

My original Camillus made BK11 is also hard to remove from it's sheath. The "thumb assist" works well on it too. Just remember which is the spine and which is the edge on the sheathed knife. It doesn't take much handling to get that tactile memory (the feel of the handle) because the handle is not symmetrical top to bottom.

I have only skunt (SW Tenneseean past tense for 'skinned') one deer with this one so far, but it performed admirably and retained it's edge through skinning, quartering and butchering the deer last fall.

I'll be picking up the new Kabar BK11 soon. Partly because I want to compare the two steels to see if I can detect the subtile differenced Ethan describes, and partly out of guilt complex for buying the original BK11 after Ethan got such a raw deal by Camillus. But hey... any excuse to get another knife is a good excuse, right? ;)

I ordered one from Tomar's Ka-Bar. Just curious. Have any of you used Tomar's to order from? This is my first with them. I'll be gettin' a Campanion or two when those are available you can bet as well.

Hey Codger.....

I will be very interested in any differences you can detect....I did test one of the new Ka-Bar BK11s to destruction last week and I was quite impressed at how much deflection it took to snap the point....I never tried this with an original and (I am not giving up one of my few original remainders to science, as a control, thank you very much).....It was a spur of the moment thing, but Paul and I both think that the forensics point to 45 degrees plus of deflection before fracture.....I am not sure if the old Camillus steel would have done that....I will try to dupe the experiment with some sort of better protocol, and measurment, soon......I would be very interested in your perceptions of sharpness charachteristics and how aggressive the cut is after you resharpen your's in an identical way.....Gonna have to do that myself this weekend......

Have fun...

Lol! Don't expect me to do deflection testing on them! Or batoning, even if they are built to take it. It just isn't what I expect from a knife. I might cut up the sternum on a deer, but never found the need to cut through the pelvis. Legbones are cut with hatchet of saw.

This morning as I backed my truck to the tool shed to leave, there were three deer making their way through the pasture about 100 yards away. I have a feeling my BK11 is going to get another tryout this weekend. That reminds me, I need to get the gambrel rigged and locate the buckets.

If the diferences in the steels are as subtile as you suggested, I might not notice the diference between the original Camillus and the newer KaBar Cro Van version. The original will do a large buck from start to finish without stopping to sharpen it. It likely would do a second before becoming really to dull to work well. In my 35-40 years of experience, any well tempered 1095 knife should be able to do this. But it is my habit to sharpen between deer regardless. I'll make it a point to do only one deer with each and compare edges before resharpening this time.

If... I get the new BK11 in time. This is my slow season for work. Hmmm... maybe I can catch a ride to that secret place you are going to be the day after Thanksgiving. You can sign my new knife!

Ethan and any others who might know the answer.... I got a TDI belt clip for my necker, but it came with no instructions. It seems like there are only two carry options, up or down? The hardware included 4 rubber O-rings.....Do they go on the opposite side of the screws to act like lock washers, or do they have another purpose. Also, what size is the "Torx" bit? Thanks a bunch.

AI

Hey Agent Iron...

They act as spacers and go in between the sheath and the clip...I apologise but I forgot to get the torx bit # when I went up to the shop....

All Best...

Thanks for the help Ethan, I talked to Ka-bar and they were very helpful. I wish there was a way to mount it sideways on the belt for a cross draw. Could you again describe how you carry your necker Ethan?

Thanks
AI

Hey AI....

I carry mine grip side up with the mid point at my sternum....I orient the back of the blade toward my strong side and reach in with a reverse grip to grasp the haft....
Play around with it as I can only say this works best for me.....You may very well find reversing the orientation is an easier draw for you...Bear in mind that I regularly wear button up shirts......In T shirt season I wear it haftside down with the spine toward the strong side.........

All Best....
