NEW Case Pocket Knives...How's the Quality?

I own roundabout 30 - 40 CASE knives and I highly appreciate them as good tools for many occasions like EDC or something like that.

As Ed almost mentioned: They are just fine.

I´ve heard several things about their QCs issues in the 90s but I never had such a knife in my paws. For me, CASE is a good cutlery. :)

My take exactly Andi.

I currently own two recent manufactured xx75 samples in CV, and the fit and finish almost rivals my Tidioute Cuban stockman. I have no experience with Case's stainless but their CV is some great stuff, easy to sharpen and maintain. You can't go wrong with a Case, their an excellent value for their price point.

My Dad is really into Case knives. The last two club knives he has purchase have been wonderfully executed. My Dad only complaint is that he doesn't like the fact that the edges, though very sharp, are completed with a very rough stone. Are they sharp, yes, are they extremely toothy, yes, are they well built, seem to be, are they a good value, absolutely.

I've done my fair share of Case bashing but in all honesty they have a process down. CV is probably my favorite steel and their deep hollow grinds can't be beat. I like the sheepsfoot on Cases. They get wider at the end and they leave some extra steel, (probably due to the hollow grind.) around the curve which gives it a stronger tip imo. I bought a medium stockman last Christmas, a 6318 in stainless and the f/f and walk and talk is as good as it gets. I like the color of their stainless and I put a nice satin finish on it which I thinks dresses it up a bit.

I've left you a Visitor Message, specific to Case's Large Stockman.

Did this guy ever answer you Sarah?

The CV is easy to sharpen, holds a good edge, and, from all indications, is a variant of 1095 (or at least that used to be the rumor). I prefer CV in my knives. Tru-Sharp is good, but I personally prefer Buck's 420HC for edge retention and ease of maintenance.

They aren't super steels. They need to be touched up every once in a while. But they work, and they work well. If you don't expect them to behave like S30V or better, you won't be disappointed.

As for the overall quality, they're working knives. They aren't flawless pieces of art, but they aren't meant to be. They work. They work well. They look good while working. Just overlook the minor flaws each one is bound to have- chalk it up to character- and use it.

I like Buck's 301 in the way of large stockmen- I have a Case yellow CV stockman, but the Buck just feels better in the hand to me. YMMV.

If it says anything, I have a CV Case peanut in my pocket right now.

UPDATE.....

Hey all. I have a great update to share with everyone.

Soon after I started this thread I got a PM from a member named Pertinux. It simply asked me to send an email to get some info about the large Case Stockman that I asked about. I sent an email right then as I was curious to know what kind of information this person wanted to share.

When I got the reply to say I was shocked would be kind of an understatement. It turns out that Pertinux is a member named Sarah. She told me that some time ago another member, MODOC ED had gifted her a LARGE CASE STOCKMAN and that it was just too big for her and she wanted me to have it. At first I thought it was some kind of joke or there was some other motive behind it. There wasn't and it wasn't a joke. I sent her my address and not long after that I got a message with a link to a tracking number that I could follow the shipping of the Stockman that was on it's way to me. I wondered what kind of shape it was going to be in or if it was somehow damaged or something. I just couldn't believe someone would send me a great knife like this without wanting anything in return.
I anxiously awaited the PostMan and on Monday he arrived and dropped my box off. I grabbed it and headed right to my desk to open it. I was like a kid at Christmas opening that box. When I got it open there was a CASE box along with a short note from Sarah. I opened that box and when I got the Stockman out I was stunned. I really was. I just sat there and looked at it for about a minute. It was BEAUTIFUL! It looked like it had never been used!! I opened the blades and they too looked nearly pristine and they were sharp as a razor. Checking the edge gave me a nice little cut on my thumb too that is just now healed.
Here are some pics of the gift that I got from SARAH (Pertinux) by way of Modoc ED::

Excuse my crazy Boxer that was taking his usual 18 hour nap.

See how gorgeous this baby is!!

It is a wonderful knife. At first I thought it might be a bit on the big side and to be truthful about it, it is a large pocket knife, but after having it in my pocket every single day since getting it out of the box I have found that it is easily manageable and carries very well for me. I wear cargo shorts quite often so the pockets are baggy and larger than what they would be on a pair of jeans. I have already used it several times in chores that I thought that I would when I posted this topic. It is working out great and I suspect it will give YEARS of faithful service. The blades are nice and straight and they have no discernible side to side play in them. I am unable to detect any marks indicating rubbing together of the blades. If you hadn't guessed by now, I am VERY HAPPY with this knife.

I want to publicly than Sarah for her incredible generosity. This is by far the nicest gift I have ever received in the years that I have been participating in numerous internet forums since 1997. Every time I pick up this knife I will think about how I got it and the person responsible for giving it to me.
I also want to thank Modoc ED for his very generous gift as well. I hope he is happy that his gift has landed in the hands of someone that really cherishes it and will use it for years to come.

I think both Sarah and Ed don't want the public praise for this gift and that's perfectly fine, but I just wanted to THANK them personally for thinking of me and reaching out to help me with this knife. The best way I can think of to honor the gift of this knife is that I am going to try and be more generous to others with my time, words and deeds. I hope I can live up to their example.

Who would've ever thought that the gift of a pocket knife could do so much for someone, but it certainly has.

Thanks all.

Nalajr

Great story. Thanks for posting it. I never grow tired of reading threads that end up this way. Big kudos to Sarah, and Ed by proxy, for the gifting of a beautiful knife. Nalajr, keep us updated on the knife as it ages. From what I've seen of others like it, it will improve dramatically with age. ;)

Nalajr,

I'm so glad you're happy with the knife. It's a great piece, and deserves to be carried and used in a way that I knew I wouldn't be able to accomplish in my day-to-day goings on.

Case's amber bone and CV steel look even better after being put to work. :)

Looking ahead? Here's an ongoing thread with others' pictures and impressions of Case's large stockman. If and as you can, I'd love it if you could add your own thoughts once some time has passed-- positives, negatives, or even just "I don't even think about it, I just use it"-- hopefully with pictures.

-0- pressure, however. The knife is yours to use (or not) as seems best to you.

Enjoy!

~ P.
