My carrier, (U.S. Cellular) is offering me a early upgrade.

They now have the iPhone 5S in addition to the Samsung Galaxy S4, Motorola X, and some others.

I currently have a Galaxy SIII, and my employer has issued me an iPhone 4S on AT&T, so I have used both IOS and Android.

Should I get an iPhone 5S? Galaxy S4? Something else? Or should I wait until July and see what else comes up?

Pros and cons?

Thanks!

I hate to say it, but I think you'll like the Iphone better. the S4 is a huge phone to drag around, and isn't that fantastic. It's essentially just a big S3. Wirecutter puts the iphone 5 as the best at the moment. If you want to stick to droid, they recommend the moto x, which I have no experience with. Right now I have a Galaxy nexus, which is pretty close to the other galaxies. I'm hoping it holds out until the next Nexus phone, since the current Nexus 5 doesn't really light my fire.

The S4 is actually smaller than the S3, despite the larger screen size. It's the same height, but it's a hair narrower, a couple hairs thinner, and a few feathers lighter. Pretty impressive. It's an amazing phone, to be sure, but I don't know if it'd worth upgrading from the S3 just yet. The S3 is still extremely capable and will handle anything you can currently throw at it app-wise. If you like your S3, I'd honestly wait until the S5 comes out. If I owned an S3, I personally couldn't justify the upgrade to the S4. Rumor is it'll have at least partial metal construction, so it'll be a more premium feeling device than Samsung's typical boring plastic.

If you want to make a big change, the Note 3 is where it's at. This thing is a monster. Both in size and in power; most people's laptops are humbled by the Note 3's specs. The S-Pen stylus adds functionality that most people don't use, but from what I gather about your profession and how you use phones/tablets, you might get great use with the S-Pen. And since the screen is so large, you might not have to lug around a laptop or tablet.

The Moto X is an interesting device. Middle-of-the-road specs, but with unique features that make it very fast and great to use. The screen won't be an improvement over your S3. It has slightly smaller dimensions, but it's thicker, and just as heavy. Despite its features, there's a few things that would prevent me from getting one myself, or recommending one to someone. First, it's thick. I like thin. Second, the battery is only of average size, and it's not replaceable. If you use your phone a lot, you're going to need to charge it a lot. My phone is a Droid Razr Maxx, and its huge battery is the reason I bought it. Alternatively, you can always buy a second battery for your S3 or S4 or S5 or Note 3. Not so with the Moto X. Third, the Moto X doesn't offer a microSD slot. For me, this is a deal-killer. For you...I can't say. Depends on how many apps you use, and if you fill up space with music/videos/etc.

Regarding the iPhone 5s; I'm biased against Apple for various reasons, so it's hard for me to recommend them. But they are nice phones, and the app selection is second to none. If you already have the 4s, and you really, really like it, then by all means, get a 5s, but all you're really getting is a slightly bigger screen (which is still small compared to your S3). If you're already required to lug around an iPhone 4s, you might as well get an Android so you've got all your bases covered. If I had to be stuck with an iPhone, the 4s would be my choice, since it is smaller. One thing that Android phones are lacking is a powerful, yet small device. Any small Android device is a cheap, budget, piece of crap.

You can pretty much ignore any other phones offered by US Cellular, except perhaps for the Kyocera Hydro XTRM. It's a tough phone, and waterproof. Its specs aren't anything to brag about, but it's tough, and it's waterproof.

To sum up...

Were I in your position, I would get the Note 3, because that's what I'm planning to do myself in 4-5 months. But it's a massive phone, and certainly not for everyone. The reason I want one is because my "phone" is less a phone and more a pocket computer. I use a ton of data, a fair amount of texts, and practically no minutes with my phone. If the Note 3 isn't your cup of tea, then I'd just wait until the S5 or something else just as juicy comes along. The S4, while nice, isn't enough of an upgrade to justify the cost and contract extension. Apart from the fingerprint scanner and a slightly bigger screen, the iPhone 5s won't give you much more of an experience than the 4s you already have.

I would wait and see what the people that bought these cell phones have any problems with them. these are the latest cell phone that are on the market right?? the first batch always seam to have problems the way I hear.

I have liked all my Motorola phones back to an old StarTac. Every time I've tried another brand (Samsung, LG, HTC, etc.) I've always been disappointed in something. Sometimes I hated the phone, sometimes I liked it but there was just one problem (e.g. my OG HTC Evo couldn't run GPS apps without killing the battery, even on a car charger) but motos just work. I'm using a Photon Q right now and the only one I liked better was the old Photon which I had to ditch because it didn't do 4G LTE.

iPhones are user friendly, so lol all you want my non tech savy self needs simple and straightforward. I just got the iphone 5, it is very easy to use and has tons of useful apps. It is also easier more pocketable.

I used to manage a Best Buy Mobile and worked there for a number of years. I could go on and on but I'll spare you.

Simple answer is there is no right answer.

Everyone has different preferences, I have owned and used every platform save Windows phone. I went from a GS3 to a Moto X and I am perfectly happy. The battery is much better in this than my gs3 and it outlasts my wife's iPhone 5s. And it's not thick at all, I actually think it feels thinner than the gs3. The Moto X is actually the only phone I have read had that I've had people ask me, "what kind of phone is that" as they look at it with wonderment.

I digress... Go in and play with everything, don't listen to reviews, try them for yourself

Mike, if you can hold off (probably 1 - 3) months, consider the Samsung Galaxy S5, which should be released in early 2014. Lots of speculation about what it might entail, but as a happy Galaxy S2 user, I'm looking forward to the possibility of a metal body. The plastic always had a cheapy feel to me, but I still love the phone's performance. The S5 should rock.

Consider also that some phones do not allow for added memory cards, and others (Moto X) don't have a replaceable battery. I sure do like the look and feel of the Moto X, but I tend to keep my phones for a long time and Motorola's decision not to let me swap out my own battery made that one a no-go. The devil is in the details.

Just think back 20 years (for those of you who can), when we were carrying a Motorola flip phone that was the size and shape of a small brick. And you had to manually deploy the antenna to use the phone.

Hi Mike, this is my story and I'm sticking to it.:) My Son had a Samsung Galaxy S4 that he bought last Spring. He got the insurance too from a company called Esecuritel. Anyhow last September I used it and it slid off my lap on the patio and scratched the screen slightly,no big deal just cosmetic. About two weeks ago it would not take a charge so we took it to the authorized repair shop to have them tell us the problem .Turns out there was a bad connection inside the internal charging port that they said could not be fixed. My Son called the insurance and they asked if there was any dings ,scratches, ect. on the phone. He told them about the little scratch and they said since he didn't report it immediately they WOULDN'T honor his insurance PERIOD,end of story!
Since I dropped it,I bought him an Iphone 5s to replace the other one. I also bought a life proof case. I was really pissed about that insurance co.
My Son likes the Iphone over his Samsung by far! He's 34 years old and a 100% disabled vet that's pretty savvy on this stuff. Me, I tossed my cell phone when I finally retired and pretty much refuse to carry one. :D

Both are solid devices.

If you are completely indifferent about the operating system and ecosystem I would say choose based on the size screen you want.

Performance will not be significantly different between the two.

Bigger screens allow you to get more text on the screen. If you are willing to lug the larger device with you you will be more productive with it.

I roll with the original samsung galaxy note so my preference is for large screens and android. YMMV.

Yes noodle,I remember those brick phones. One day as I walked into the men's room my boss had one between his face and shoulder talking while taking a leak and dropped it in the urinal. I had to walk out fast because I couldn't control my laughter.

I was just reading through a bunch of review pages. Generally, the iPhone is still held to be the best overall. Build quality, processor, display, function....Great camera in the new one.
However the Galaxy compares very well... It's a tad bigger which might be better or worse depending on what you're doing... One of our officers has one and I don't know where she puts the thing....

I'm with stingy 'ol ATT, they are not giving me a free upgrade till March, and it looks like the iphone 4 is gonna be the free one.
Interestingly, the one review site I looked at said that the 4 was still the best entry-level phone...Given that it's some two years outdated.

t mobile keeps giving me text that I can up grade my phone but why should I ?? this one does every thing I need for it to do.
