Thought I would put this out there...the wife got it for me for xmas its actually a lamb splitter/seafood knife but since necessity is the mother of invention and William M. got that darn Hudson Bay knife in my head...we saw it in a window in San Francisco over the holiday. 35 Bucks!

12.5" Blade, 18.5 Overall and 5/32" Thick

I'll be beating the heck out of it with pics in the coming months...would like to figure out if its full tang and if so G10 slabs would be the mod.

Greban is the maker out of Canada

Chef,

Let us know how that holds up. I like that design, I have been eyeballing a big camp knife on Bill Siegle's gallery for a while... BTW, how thick is the blade?

Chef,

Disregard the thickness question, I see it was in your post... Damn I'm hungover!!!

I like that knife. It looks ike it would be a great all purpose knife. Match that with a light weight Mora and you would be ready for anything.

damn that William .M...

:)

That looks well worth the $$$

Let us know how it works and were we can get one as well

Is that stainless?

Yep. Stainless, it be!

As to the internet site that was found be wary (not of the site mind you, I know nothing about them). I handled the Black handled ones as well at the store, they have noticeably less thickness and the fella told me they are the "new" style. The blue looks to be 5/32 while the Black was more like 1/8th.

-Okay as to heft, its exactly in the middle between an 18" Ontario Machete and a 12" Ang Khola Kukri. Weighted toward the head of the blade, but not so much as to be cumbersome. Feels like what it is, purpose built for splitting meat and bone.

*THats the link to the store, they are really great people, Nadia is the lady in the pic...my grandad used to take me here 20 plus years ago and its still the same kind hearted folks running it. Its really a great shop and they can fix anything I've ever done to a chef knife ; )

I noticed the book you have there. "The Road" great book.

That reminds me of the Old Hickory Butcher knife. People have been using those in the bush so I bought one of the 8" versions to try out as a camp knife. Is that knife in any way like the Old Hickory Butcher knife? They appear to have a close blade design.

Morablades-not really man. Its bigger and thicker and stainless as opposed to carbon.

udtjim-I think so bro...but call to double check. I usually just drop in once a year or so, they have good prices on most everything.

I just picked up this browning (shown here with my Troodon) for a good chopper.. That one you have there looks like it would be just a tad more effective though :)

Cormac Macarthy also wrote "No country for old men," I was pleased to find out. Can't wait to see it. I hope they don't ruin the Road when the inevitable hollywood movie is made.
Back OT, I once found an old cleaver at a campsite, looked like it was used for cutting up game, but after I sharpened it it chopped like the devil, but was too heavy.
I use my mora in the kitchen now, so I see no reason not to use a kitchen knife in the wilds.
