new chopper

The problem I just encountered is that the edge dented pretty deeply on thumb-sized brush. Hopefully a sharpening or two will stop that from happening. If it keeps up I'll send it back for warranty replacement. That steel is too soft if it dents on < 1" diameter scrub willow.

Yeah--that's not right. If a few sharpenings don't get you past the soft zone you should contact Rick at Condor. All of my personal pieces haven't dented even when chopping frozen pine knots in the dead of winter.

Damn that's nice...

Indeed. I want it.

If I was wanting a chopper I think I'd save up my coin for one of these...

Or even one of these if they hadn't hiked the price up so much...:(

I like the idea of a knife like the Chris Caine parang. Over here you can get one for £50 less than a Junglas.
Been able to place two hands on the handle has got to make chopping more effective.
I'm suprised more companies don't offer 9+ inch blades with long useable handles.

I would definitely send the golok back. That doesn't sound right. The golok and the 1/8" bolo machete I have from Condor both have bullet proof edges. They may not be the sharpest tools in the tool shed, but they seem much harder than you could imagine for a machete steel. They chop more like Busses than Latin American machetes. I've chopped frozen wood with the bolo and it just laughed it off, and the edge on that is less obtuse (or maybe equal) than the golok.

The new Condor Goloks are pretty slick. I wish they were a little thiner, but thats just me.

For the money Condor really cant be beat

I was looking at Mr. 42's site, and I prefer the looks of the Tapanga over the Golok...but that's just me.

It's an awesome heavy chopping design, and more agile than you'd expect! Nothing quite like a broad, thin blade for chopping deep into heavy targets. A perfect example of what I personally look for in a machete. Personal preferences may vary person to person, but I like pieces like the Tapanga. The Viking is my workhorse. :D

I have a new Bear Grylls Parang and despite the hype style advertising, it is a lot of bang for your buck.

I liked the look of that one since it was announced, and have yet to hear a bad thing about it. Looks like a bargain!

I'm very happy with my 2 designated choppers. HI Tamang and Swamp Rat Battle Rat...

i ordered that one last night too. figured for $30 shipped, it's worth a shot. if all the good things i hear is true then it's kinda ironic that that one's very affordable whereas les stroud's knife is twice the typical helle model.

I really like this one. I used it for days in Peru and made shelter and fire with it.

Filipino blade shape, 5160 steel, 12" blade.

That's the one I did a link to, great looking blade. I bet it cuts pretty good to with the high flat grind eh ?

Here's something I drew up a month ago. I'm still figuring out who's going to make it for me though...

It is amazing how it chops. That high flat grind is the key. It tapers from spine to edge like nothing else out there. I used it for days and it stayed sharp the whole time. There will be a full review in SWAT Magazine on it in the future, but I will tell you now, I haven't been this impressed by a big chopper in a long time!

A student there (averageiowaguy) wanted to buy one after he used it to chop some fire wood.
