Sorry about the size boys, and don't try to file the kick down. If you look at the butt of the closed Civilian you will notice only a 2 mm gap between the fragile tip and the metal spacer. If you mess with the kick the tip is going to break off your knife when you close it!

Thanks for the pics, MM. I'll check out the sheaths if I decide to go that way (looks pretty tight.)

I had no idea that that is normal for a knife with THAT blade shape. My mistake!

My Civvie has that gap, it's never caused any problems in my pocket nor has my endura hawk with similar gap.

My Civi had a gap like yours, I think it is normal with all serratted Civies. Due to the large size and single purpose, I sold it and am very happy with my Dodos. Smaller, lighter and the stubby blade allows great control and power. The Dodo serves many purposes. The Civilian is a great looking blade though!

Gap is normal for the Civi, and on my SE Harpy. The PE models have a different grind which does not show when closed. Don't be alarmed, as your knife is just like every other SE Civilian in that regard.

Well.... it's kind of hard to take exception to a concensus like this one. I'll still report what the Spyderco guys have to say, but it doesn't sound like mine's any better/worse than anyone else's.

Thanks for all the input.

I'm sure no one that sees you pulling that knife will complain about the gap, at least.

It's weird looking, but I think it's kind of cool too.

Here's the response I got from Customer Service at Spyderco:
"That is the way the Civilian is designed. They all are like that. With the
curve of the blade there is not much room for the tip, and you do not want
the knife to bottom out."

That having been said.... I'm not sure I like it, but I will accept that it's not a QC issue in the strictest sense of the word. It would have been nice if Spyderco's Web Site didn't do such a great job of camoflaging the gap.

Guess I'll carry it a while and see if I can get comfortable with it. Hope the Harpy I've got coming doesn't have such a pronounced "feature." :)

Well, if it's serrated, I imagine it will have a gap, although not quite as pronounced as that on the Civilian, since all of mine do. If it's plain edge, then it should not have a gap, at least none of mine do.
