Hey all,

I was flipping through the new Cold Steel catalog that I get and came upon the new and BIG fixed blades that have the paracord wrapped around the handles. They are black coated and come with a sheath. I'm sure you know what I am talking about.

Anyway, what's your opinion of these knives? Do they come with a good edge or do you have to sharpen it up yourself? I am looking for something I can throw in my shooting bag for when I go to the woods to shoot some.

What do you think of these knives?

Thanks for the time and your thoughts.

I will know soon. I have one ordered. To my thinking they are already very sharp and a good all around survival knife. Can't wait to try it out.

The sheath that comes with it is pretty pathetic from what
I've heard. Still, for $26, what do you expect? It also appears
large and fairly blocky, but it should do just fine. I probably
would get one myself if someone offered a decent sheath
for it. You should be able to work up a decent edge on it.

They're less "knives" than they are large pieces of carbon steel with an edge, more prybar than whittler. If that's what you're looking for.

I have not used a paracord wrapped knife, but the ones I have handled don't seen comfortable enough for hard use.

Anybody know where that G. I. Tanto is made? Taiwan is OK with me, but I'm getting tired of things from China.

I've handled a few of the throwing knives and a couple of the barongs, they have a "utility edge". Just sharp enough to cut you but not much else.

If you want a good cheap knife get a Buck 119 or a Mora instead.
Ontario has a cheap but good line made of 1085 steel I think it is called sppec ops?

I would pass it by. I almost bought one then I started sheath shopping. A typical sheath costs $50-65. So when you add it up, $25 for the Knife with the sheath $75-90. Still not a bad deal but you could get a Ontario Rat 7 for around that price which is a FAR superior knife all around. The RAT has a micarta handle to boot.

This is actually what I ended up doing except I bought a Ranger RD-4. A little more but still under $100.

They are great for the money. I got one just to see what it was all about. Sheath is usable but not great. Its a hard blade to beat for the money. Also look into Moras if you haven't already. The edge is a "working" edge, but can be made sharp with a belt sander...............:D
