New Collector Seeking Lonely, Single (Bladed) Kershaw... for Companionship & EDC!

My favorite is the 1900ET External Toggle. It has an unobtrusive, deep carry pocket clip (doesn't scream "Hey! Look at my knife!" too loud), a secure yet novel locking system, a deeply hollow-ground blade that gets freaky sharp, a carabiner that doubles as a potential carrying clip and a bottle opener. It also has a manual lock safety so you can use the carabiner or bottle opener without accidentally springing open the blade.

8cr13mov is a great steel for the price point. Much better IMO than 14c28n. My zing in 14c28n rusted yes in 4 days, and yes it's probably because I live on the coast. But I also own a chill in 8cr13mov and that has yet to rust!!

BTW here is proof, not my video either found it on youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RD094v1-1U

Wow, one isolated incident without even an explanation of what he was doing when it failed, or if he contacted Kershaw about that.

If you want to go up the price range a little bit, look at the speedform II. it has ELMAX steel, which, by all accounts, is extremely good. it is a nice size, no assisted opening and generally looks kind of like a cross between a leek and a skyline, if you look really hard ;)
It is a little expensive, like 90 bucks, but I bet it will be worth it.
If you like the JYD I, then look at the JYD II. it is bigger, more substantial, and generally one of the funnest folders you will ever buy.

I have 2 knives in 14C28N, and neither one has rusted. however, i found rust spots on my S60V Blur with a Stonewashed finish. does that mean that S60v is a bad steel?

There have been incidents of the grooved knives from kershaw getting carbon steel shavings in the grooves and those rusting, giving the appearance that the entire blade is rusting. however, the rust is easily scrubbed off.

First piece of advice... Never buy a Kershaw with a bead blasted finish, they rust in a matter of days. Make sure the blade has a satin or stonewashed finish.

Second piece of advice... Never buy a knife with a frame lock ( The salvo has a frame lock by the way). Never buy a frame lock, not at least if your planning on using it, frame locks are ok for collections, but not for use, I have had a few frame locks fail before... buy liner locks or lock backs

If I were you I would buy a chill because they are cheap, 8cr13mov is great steel, and they are lightweight!!!

Wow, the post is FULL of ignorance. Disregard everything that this person says.

+1 for the Nakamura

EDIT: You may want to have a look at the Kershaw 'Gentleman's folder'. I'm not sure if it's still made, but it would seem to fit your description perfectly. Micarta handle, VG-10 blade, not assisted, gentlemanly, no funky pocket clip, and a nice subdued design.

These are discontinued but can still be found pretty easily.

I really think the Scallion is a good choice. Mine holds an edge very well, and I don't think it rusts. It is a liner lock, though.

Not sure what your looking for, but a nice small pocket knife is the double cross, looks like a slip joint but has liner locks and thumb studs and wood scales, but no clip.

That video is solid proof that, no matter how idiot-proof a locking mechanism is, there is always someone idiotic enough to muck it up and injure themselves.

So rust resistance is the one characteristic that determines the quality of a steel? Hey, I've had blades in 1095 that rusted a bit - I guess 1095 is garbage steel. I had a plane blade in A2 develop a bit of rust, I guess A2 isn't as good as 8cr13Alphabetsoup. ;) I guess, by your own reasoning, Titanium is the best blade material ever because it won't rust.

There is so much wrong with this post it makes my head hurt.

I agree with Verisharp on this, though I wouldn't limit the issue exclusively to Kershaw. I have, however, had pinprick rust appear on my Kershaw Chive, ET, Groove, Speed Bump and Storm.

(I live 12 miles from the beach.)

To the OP, I would have recommended the Leek for your first Kershaw, but you've already ruled it out. The JYD series is nice, but I'm with you on the clip. "STR" here on BladeForums makes clips to replace the Junkyard Dog clip, though, with something less obtrusive. The R.A.M. might be a good choice for you, as well. Good luck.

After searching for a 'representative' Kershaw to add to my collection, I've come around on the Kershaw Leek and my aversion to AOs. The composite Leek looks fantastic! Too nice to pass on, actually, so it's on my list along with the Blur, OD 1, Salvo, Chill and Nerve. Thinking of ordering all of them in the next month or so.

Thanks again to all who helped shove me into the Kershaw pool!

Don't worry about this "advice" it isn't very good! Frame locks are acually one of the strongest locks currently being made and kershaw produces a very nice framelock indeed! Btw check out the OD-1 its a very nice little blade that you might enjoy!

Ah you really need to try out the Skyline :p. It is a solid little knife that is easy to carry, easy to clean, has a nice blade shape and flipper action, and feels good in hand. It was small for my hand but if it is the right size for you I bet you'd enjoy it.

My dad liked it so much he magnanimously accepted it as a "gift" :D

The Kershaw 1993-2 'Gentleman's Folder', depicted earlier, has been out of production for a year or two. The plastic belt clip on the black leather sheath is pretty cheesy, but the quality of the sheath and knife are first class. The knife is made in Japan. My knife is a great 'dress up' knife - classy yet unobtrusive - and sharp.

Kershaw had them in and out of production before - if you don't find old stock somewhere, wait - they'll likely be back. None on evilbay now - some 'other' Kershaws with the 'gentleman's folder' name, however. Mine - and the earlier pictured one is the 1993-2. Good luck!

I recently read a particularly heated thread about Kershaw concerning a certain ZT knife. After reading the comments from a Kershaw Big Wheel and also the vendor, who were both were willing to stand behind their Kershaw products and go above and beyond to make their customer happy, I simply had to run down to the brick & mortar and buy one. I had plans to order a few from an online source (and still do) but I wanted a Kershaw ASAP. Today was the day.

I now own a Blur with the Sandvik 14C28N blade (1670BLK.) And just to ensure this guy wasn't picked on by my Spydercos, I got him a little buddy: the OverDrive 2. I am impressed by both.
