This is a bit non-knife related, but is of interest to many of you.
I was contacted a while back by the USA 400th Anniversary ( Jamestown Settlement) committee. They wanted information on how to reproduce a piece of jewelery that was found in an archaeological dig at Jamestown. I was contacted by the head of the group today to commission me to make the piece (I will just say that it is a brooch for now). They wanted it made authentically and in the fashion the original was. They wanted it made by a local Virginia craftsman. It will require alloying, forging and drawing out gold, and carving the object by hand, and then setting it. The dollars involved are quite good, but that is not the real deal.
The big part is that this commission is for the USA gift to Queen Elizabeth II when she comes in six weeks to officiate the celebration. I will be involved in meeting the Queen and presenting the piece. I saw her when she came 50 years ago. (Some of you may know, but meeting the Queen is a lot harder to do than meeting the President.) It will certainly be the high point in my career.
I will post more on the piece as it develops, and will post photos if allowed to. At the very worst, you guys will see it a few hours before the Queen does.
