Well, thanks for all the input folks.
Charlie N, you have me all but convinced it originated from Robeson! The letter, the bone, the shield all add up!!
And here's the kicker. I went back and measured it again, and it is 3 1/4"!!!
I remembered it as 3 1/4", and cannot explain why I wrote 3 1/8" when I posted it.
Too much multitasking I guess!
I have corrected the OP.
So it may in fact be the 416 you refer to, Charlie.
Blade's Guide To Knives and the earlier edition of John Goins book state that Continental Cutlery Co. was a merchant branding of Clark Brothers who bought Northfield Knife Co. in 1919 and operated it until 1929 when they went bankrupt. It was a branding they used 1915-1920. They were both a manufacturer and importer 1895-1929.
You're welcome Charlie. If someone is in the area and wishes to look into the Buchanan Hardware Company records (1888-1962) they are in the posession of the New York State Historical Association. Here is the index online: http://library.nysha.org/special_collections/buchanan.htm
I don't know if a catalog from the pre-WWI period is in the collection or not, but one could inquire.
Beautiful knife, I love the bone and the jigging, if I'm not mistaken the little blade is a corn knife which was very popular in pen type multi blades and lobster patterns, I have two knives with that type of corn blade one is an 1800s pearl lobster by a Hungarian knife maker and the other was an early 1900s pen knife.
Your right about the little blade, it is a very handy design, enjoy your treasures.
Charlie Noyes seems to have cracked it-his Cigar is near exact with the Bone as Charlie N says, Charlie C - that's a beautiful pen, and the condition is absolutely fantastic - what a fantastic gift, and what a generous thing to do for the seller.
Im just going back to the OP and have another squizz at that neat knife!
