New Compasses and lights

I've gotten a couple of new compasses and a couple of new lights in the past few days. I had never seen these eGear lights before but they look a lot like the little steam lights. And I have been wanting one of the Suunto global compasses for a while now. I got the little Brunton compass for the navigation/temperature thing because of having Alayna with me in the field so much lately. I tend to ignore temperatures... other than b!#ching about them at extemes so I thought having a thermometer along might help me keep track of when I should get her back to cool or warmth.

These little eGear lights are really bright for small lights, they have 4 little watch batteries in them. eGear makes some dynamo lights I want to get next.

I'll try to post some specs on them later with better pics. I have an eye infection that is making reading small print very difficult.

I should know better than to click on your threads. I just wind up spending money.

Jeez, the lights didn't cost much, I think like $5.00 a piece for the eGear lights and $5.00 for two of the other lights. The Global compass wasn't all that expensive...just not exactly cheap either :)

Of all the time I spend on CPF, I never heard of the eGear lights. May have to get some next time I pick up a flashlight.

As for heat.. it is going to be the 90's everyday in the next week here. I am not used to that, so it is going to suck. Good thing I have a pool...

I had never heard of them before either.

As for the heat, here we have had 110F heat indexes lately, have fun in that pool :)

I stumbled into eGear lights casually, on an online store here in Italy. No Idea about their bigger models, but I bought a couple of very small ones, one with an inbuilt battery charged with a USB port, and the other one with inbuilt battery charged through the car lighter thing.
Of course u can't ask them wonders, but their light is pretty bright and they're nice and really small and light. And surely not expensive.

I was just looking at those, and I like them too. They also make a Ti version of this light, a palm-sized 3 LED dynamo, and a key chain 2LED dynamo that I want.

Do they stay off when they're in your pocket? I've never liked keychain flashlights, because I always have trouble with them turning on in my pocket and wearing down the batteries.

I tried one of those zipper pull lights as a keychain light, but had the same problem. That, and I eventually cracked the clear case.

I'm interested in the cigarette lighter version as well.

I own these 2:

mine is orange and has a nice small carabiner/keyring. It never turned on in my pocket actually, guess it's because the rubber makes enough friction to stop the crown turning and the light turning on. Can't say much about batteries cause I haven't used it alot yet.

it's not that powerful of course, but I leave it in my car all the time, don't need to worry about batteries, so it seemed nice.

Could you tell more about the Suunto global compass?

I'm going to do an actual review on it. I am still recovering from a bad eye infection...typing is just now getting easier. I just ordered the maps i wanted today, so they should be here in a few days. Probably another week or so till the actual review though.

what kind of firesteel on the stump?

The one with the new compass and RC-3MIL is an ESEE fire kit, the one with the Wenger Ranger is a Ti nanostriker from Exotac.

Hehe. You too? :)
Are those compasses by Silva?

No, it's a Suunto. As far as I know Suunto has the patent on that style of global compass though I'm sure others are working on versions of their own. I don't necessarily plan on heading south of the equator any time soon, I just thought that the more freedom of movement of the needle would make it less touchy if used while fatigued or slightly disoriented.

The guys on the ESEE forum say the global compasses are also easier to use while moving. I still stop and double check my reading after taking a moving reading. So far my readings have been consistent and I'm gaining confidence - old habits are hard to break.:o

I hadn't even considered the on the move part...been years since i even had to think in those terms...but i suppose that is a good point and in the current global situation a noteworthy one as well.
