New Computer - going from PC to iMac

I started out way back in the early 80's with an Apple IIe. Or maybe there wasn't even an "e." 2 5-1/4" floppies to run the program and save the data. Then the big corporate switch to PC's and hard drives.

For my personal computer I have always had a PC so that it would be compatible with my work computer. Business software was for a PC - not normally an Apple/Mac.

It was time for me to think about replacing my 6-7 year old Dell Dimension 4700. I was talking to one of the IT Tech's this morning at work about PC's and asking his opinion, and he started talking about Mac's, and he apparently is a real computer geek and has his Mac set up with the iMac X OS, plus Windows! And a whole bunch of other cool things. The guy has a 98" projection monitor for his main computer at home. Sheesh!

So today I order an iMac. When it arrives, I am turning it over to Brandon, the IT geek, and he is going to "trick my iMac" for me. It is going to be awesome. I will keep my Windows laptp and desktop, because they work and there is no reason to get rid of them.

I never thought I would purchase a Mac. Wow. I've never been against Mac's, and I always acknowledged that they are superior to PC's, but PC's were what I used. Now I will have a lot to learn about the iMac!

The IT geek has all sorts of training videos that he has been collecting on different software programs, etc. and I know he is going to include some of them on my iMac.

Woo Hoo!!

My daughter got a MacBook Pro for graduation. Within 10 minutes of opening it up, she was already hooked up to our wireless internet, telling her friends about it. I have a desk top iMac, I love it.

You'll be just fine, just remember: [control] + [click] for right click and everything else will fall into place :)

After over 20 years with PCs, 4 of them, I bought an iMac. So far, I like it. It takes a little getting used to.

As jbob24 said, ctrl+click replaces right click and I don't see any way to get right click to work the same on a Mac, but it's no big deal.

What's really great is that the computer is ready to use in about 30 seconds. Even my newer PC laptop which has had very little use takes 3 to 4 minutes to go
through all it gyrations loading Windows Xp.

FYI on the PC front, I've been looking into upgrading after a long time. These days Intel is offering a sandy bridge processor that's unlocked (K suffix only) meaning you can overclock it without messing with bus speeds or ram timings. They're four core and run ~4.2 Ghz overclocked at the stock Cpu voltages on air. With 64 bit Windows7 you can run way over 4Gigs of ram and it's REALLY cheap these days. With the new 1155 motherboards you can now go over the old ~2 Terabyte limit on hard drives. Good time to upgrade, but if you wait until Q4 2011 or Q1 2012, you'll do even better with the Ivy Bridge die shrink and improved motherboard chipset. If none of that makes sense, buy the Mac. ;)

PC means Personal Computer. Macs are Apple PC's. Hopefully it serves you well.

As to always thinking Mac is the superior system, that is false.

You lost me at "overclocked."

Nah... just kidding. :D I love PC's. But I am going to try the Mac. When I retire in a few years (fingers crossed), I want to learn how to use my super duper digital camera AND photoshop. And I want to see how much fun a Mac will be. I'm 30+ years on a PC. This old dog is gonna learn some new tricks!

Rat - yeah, I was just thinking about that in my reply to Shunsei (PC = personal computer). I knew that people would understand what I meant. I couldn't say I was going from Windows to a Mac, because I am also going to be running Windows on the Mac!

And you are correct, my use of the word "superior" was not the word I should have used. I love PC's and they have always provided everything that I have ever needed to do on a "personal computer." I think I probably should have said that it is my understanding tht Mac's are better in the graphics area. I am no computer dummy. I'm not a programmer or an IT Tech, but computers have always been my friend and we have gotten along just fine and dandy for all of these years.

I've never "dissed" a Mac - Mac's just aren't the computers that have been commonly used in my business career.

One of the very first things I did was to replace the silly Mac mouse with a programmable Logitech mouse. It has the 'right click' as above, as well as a button to go back a page on the browser and a button to close the program or window.

I found the interface VERY confusing at first, and missed the single program full screen aspect that is predominant Windows, but with enough window expansion you can get around that. That's cumbersome. I don't like all those confusing screens.

(BTW Apple is now going to offer this aspect in the next OS system. Enough input from PC converts must have pushed them over the edge. HOORAY!)

10+ years ago my Mom had a Mac that I absolutely hated with a passion---you couldn't do anything with it--maybe the new ones are better? I pretty much dislike all things Apple but I did get an iPod about 6 months ago that has worked just fine.

As I type on a $288 Walmart laptop running Windows 7 on 64 bits--not good for games but perfect for surfin the net while I lay in bed.

I have a Logitech mouse on the way. I'll see how that goes.

RE: PC vs Mac. Everyone has an opinion and we all know what opinions are like.;)

Used PCs for eternity ... till about 1.5 years ago. Been on a personal iMac since then and have had zero problems, lots of satisfaction.

HOWEVER -- at work, it's all PC, all the time. And of course my iMac has an intel processor.

I have quite a bit of experience with the old MacOS computers like the LC series.
Bought a Beige G3 computer that someone had loaded with OSX. Hated it; it was like Linux but without the customization options. Erased the hard drive and installed MacOS9, and it became a thing of beauty once again as it was originally designed. :)

A few people at work have Apple laptops, which they use to run Windows XP. :D

I received a Logitech M305 wireless mouse today.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
It does exactly what I want. Right click works just like an MS PC and I didn't have to program it. The only thing I had to do was slow down the tracking speed.

"A few people at work have Apple laptops, which they use to run Windows XP."

I put XP on the Mac for my wife because she was used to it. After using Safari a few times she doesn't bother with XP.

Hmm...mac's always seemed like windows pc's in disguise to me...same hardware, prettier package, uglier price.

As the old saying goes, "Opinions are like a............., everyone has one and....." Oops! I almost forgot. This is a PG forum.:D

noooooooooooooooooooooooooo

parents have an imac

i got a laptop with win7

refuse to go back. Mac's are fine, as long as what you want to do is what apple want you to do. you can't hack/crack/fiddle/change anything at all, absolutely no capacity for personal customisation.

I'm a dedicated Mac user although for what little I do it really doesn't matter what machine I have but I was intrigued by an article a while back that explained the reason the prices of Macs and Windows machines differ so much.

In a nutshell and using my own metaphor: getting a $300 Windows whatever is like buying a plain jane Mazda B3000 and comparing it to a nicely appointed Chevy Silverado. Mac just doesn't make a machine as low end as Windows does. If you want to compare a nicely appointed Ford F-150 (how I refer to a Windows machine) to a nicely appointed Chevy Silverado (how I refer to a Mac) then the prices will start to be more in line with each other.

But these days it comes down most to user preference. Something else interesting in the article was that the most well protected Windows user was still more vulnerable to viruses and the like than the least protected Mac user.

All that to say, Congratulations! Judy. I'm sure you will enjoy your new computer very much.

I guess I'm going to be ordering me a Logitech mouse!! I love the right click and never did like not having the right click function when I was helping VG get his Mac Mini set up to try to get him back on BF.

Thanks for the input and discussion. I appreciate it.
