Just found what I think is a good deal on one on Ebay. I have been wanting a hand forged hawk for a good while. Even bid on a few but the price always went to high. What are the thoughts on his work? Best place to find a nice handle if I decide to really prurty it up? I think this may start a whole new addiction.
Link to the hawk. Hope is OK to post as it is not an active listing.

I have an older hammer poll CB. He does good work.
Mine is a user and throws really well.

House handle has a Craig Barr special.

That is the finish I am looking to get. What type stain did you use? I have the linseed oil and gun stock wax.

Appears to be an aqua fortis finish. It's an acid (nitric?) that's applied then a hot peice of iron or steel is held above it, and it changes color, makes the grain pop with a hand oiled finish

Please show us exactly how you get that finish! It looks fantastic.
What happens and in what order...I'm a complete newbie at this and really want that look on a piece I've had sitting around for a long time 'cause I didn't want to screw it up.

I have a Barr Damascus "hawk. No poll or spike. I just sanded it down and gave it a re-etch. Turned out good.
The barr is the smallest hawk I have. Read the descriptions closely.

Got the hawk today. Really impressed with it. It came with an unfinished maple handle so I have started practicing a little on it while waiting on the curly maple. Stained it today with some old stain I had, waiting on the aqua fortis to get here. I will post pics as I go on the curly maple to show how good or bad it goes with a newby.
Anyway here is what I have right now.

Very nice finish on that haft.
Is that the same piece that is posted above?

Thanks for posting a link to the process.

Very nice just be careful with that Aqua Fortis it's some strong stuff I know I spilled some on my floor. It will never come off and don't forget to dispose of your rags the right way. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks
I know I will have some. I saw that the Aqua Fortis is an acid and gloves are recommended. Think I am going to try the method of applying the stain and sanding it off for several coats. They say that makes the curls really pop out as the stain goes deeper into them. By sanding between coats you are keeping one grain lighter while darkening the other.

Got the curly maple haft in. It was a good bit too large so I just got finished sanding it down. I have it fitting pretty good but I think I took a little too much the thickness. How much expansion can I expect soaking it in linseed oil?

Will do. I was thinking a saw somewhere that you could soak in an oil to expand the wood like you do with water. Will it be best to mount the head before or after finishing the haft.

The Aqua Fortis won't work if you soaked the haft with Blo first and if you soak it after it will get to dark. Get the head where you want it finish sand it steel wool the burrs off apply your stain and BLO. The last thing you do is mount the head. You also want the BLO to soak in between coats that could take some time. I waited 24 hours between coats.

Thanks. Have not applied anything yet. The fit to the head should be better after I really seat in in permentaly.
