New Craig Barr hawk

Here is pics of the curly maple. Think I have it ready for staining. The head is just pushed up by hand. Think the fit will be much better after I drive it on.

Drive it on with a rubber mallet by hitting it on top of the haft a couple good whacks. Drive it back off hitting it on the bottom of the haft their will be marks from the head where you need to sand more.

Thanks, that helped a lot. 15 min of sanding in the right places has really closed up those gaps.

Here it is after 3 coats of stain heat with hair dryer applied between each coat and a very light sanding with a scotch brite pad. Took a good bit more heat to turn the color than it did for the guys on youtube. The second pic is after wiped with a damp cloth to get an idea of what it will look like after the oil treatment.

Looks great that's why I went and got a heat gun a hair dryer will work but takes a lot longer. Tiger maple is some gorgeous wood.

Thank You!
I am happy with it so far for my first time. It looks better in person, the camera does not catch the 3d effect.

Take a pic of it in the sunlight when your done it will show then. Nice work not a lot of info out there on that finish.

Here it is after one good coat of BLO. Not sure if I am going to do any more coats if it darkens with more coats. The color is dead on where I want it. How long should I let it dry before the wax and is there any other prep work before wax?

Big difference huh I let it soak in for at least 24 hours depends on the weather.

I am very pleased with the grain. This was a 7.00 haft, wonder how good one of the 40.00 ones would have been. Got to keep the head shiny.

All waxed up and finished unless I decide to tie a leather wrap under the head. Thanks for all the help. Think I will do another soon only it will have to be a Cold Steel next time.

Very nicely done!
Where did you get the haft? I looked at haft house and couldn't find the curley maple nor the $40 maple hafts.

The ones for 25.00 to 40.00 showed a ton of figure even unfinished.

Thanks. In my searching i found One of the major makers of hafts had an eBay store. They had a wider variety than what was offered on their website.
