New cruwear, your opinions on my concerns with defects please...

SSG White, if you honestly think the steel has been burned than the best course is to send it back to the factory for a replacement. They do have a lab and you can't hide a burn from a microscope. If that is what it is they would like to get it looked at and out of circulation.

I'd imagine they could get a replacement at the factory through W&R. They have worked pretty hard at becoming the Spyderco we all like and probably want to keep their reputation. Try calling W&R and tell her about your fear of not being able to find another one to replace it.

I believe that you are the one that has to be satisfied with the purchase. It's worth checking and probably best done before applying a patina so they can look at it was when it shipped and determine if it does have a problem, and if so, how it made it through QC.

Good luck SSG White.

Joe,
I really appreciate you taking the time to give me the additional advice. I emailed Spyderco; I'll see what they have to say. If the W&R dept says its fine, it's good enough for me. I honestly just want to start putting it through its paces; but if its an issue, I want to be able to return it (only for an exact replacement). I was originally drawn to this knife because of the steel; I am a huge fan of the old Vascowear Gerber FSII; pretty much all vintage Gerbers for that matter. I've been trying to get a hold of a Gerber FSII in V-steel for about 10 years now; so when I saw this I was all in. Honestly after all the posts, I'm really not as worried about it as I initially was. Thanks everyone!

SSG White, the FS2 "V" steel ( vascowear) was what introduced me to the steel as well. I couldn't get one of my own when they were being made from around 81 to 87 maybe? I was newly married, out of the army, a state employee and very broke ( 13.5K a year :) )

It took me until near 2008 before I finally got one from a dealer at a gun show I knew for 20 years. Her husband had passed and it was his and she sold it too me. It was set over 50 degrees angle from the factory but would still shave my arm.

I had several Vascowear customs made by then and really liked, and still do like the steel for it's toughness, edge stability and abrasive wear resistance. It really is as advertised an upgrade for D2 except for corrosion resistance.

By now I have had experience with real super steels such as S110V, S125V, A11, K390 S90V, Rex 20 ( M62) etc. Cruwear will never match their wear resistance but I still like it and I find it's almost a perfect balance for hard use knives fitting somewhere between 3V and CPM M4 . All good steels IMO.

Despite having quite a few Vascowear and cruwear knives ( and Zapp Z wear) I am still learning CPM Cruwear and it's likes and dislikes.

I wish you luck on finding the Sportsman 2 Vascowear folder. They are getting harder and more difficult to find not to mention more expensive. One thing I have found is there is an Asian company with knockoffs of all the old Gerber Sportsmen models including "V" steel so be careful.

The original high performance "sprint run" in it's day it set some trends.

Joe

Joe,
I honestly didn't know about the asian knock offs! Thanks for the heads up, I will definitely look closer now. I do, however, have an FSII from Solingen, Germany ;)
