New CS Bushman sheaths

Cold Steel has always been somewhat of a mystery knife company to me. I really don't like most of their current line, but the shovel, their hawks and the Bushman have always been great tools. When I spotted the new sheaths that come with the Bushman now, I was sold. It's their "Secure Ex" which is basically hard plastic, and it also comes with a sheath mounted fire steel. This is a HUGE step up from the fake leather/plastic floppy sheaths they used to come with. I plan on picking one up to play with, just trying to decide on the standard or Bowie version. Man, if only they would bring the mini back with this sheath setup.

Definitely! I had always thought of getting a Kydex sheath made for mine, but it would almost triple the price of the knife. The price is still reasonable, looking around online it looks like most places have it for right about $25

Wow, they look pretty sweet sheaths. With the firesteel too makes it great for the survival kit.

I have the regular and Bowie if you want any comparison info between the two blades. Be aware that they are lighter in weight than you would imagine - not heavy chopping blades at all.

Funny as this knife was my first "survival knife" I had ever purchased a long time ago. Then nothing ever really came of it and I thought it was a dead product...now this! Cool!

I've got more knives than I'll ever really need, but when I got the email on this, it made me actually wanna get one of these. Really hope the firesteel is decent and replaceable!

Much needed, and I agree about only liking a few of their things, like the hawks.
I would get the standard, the bowie is easily the ugliest thing I own, knife or not, and does not add enough weight for chopping at all.
I have two of the older style bushmans, with no weld on the handle and slightly thicker. One wears a fancy normark sheath, otherwise I would buy another one.
I modded all of them too, stripped paint, finger choil, and made them into drop points.

Drop points would really make these much better for me as well, I'd love to see pics if you have any handy.

That's great. It's a pretty tough tool, but the sheath was awful. Made a kydex one for mine.

Btw, if you wanna use the handle to store anything, a boat drain plug fits.

When I first saw these I figured it was about time. I never actually minded the other sheaths, even though they weren't the best quality. I just figured I'd get a new one made when it wore out. Now I could just buy a new knife for less than having a sheath made would cost.

It looks great, but I wonder if it'll still fit after you cordwrap the handle. (We all wrap the handles, don't we?) I guess it probably will work if you use thin cord.

That's a good point, I cord wrapped by original version. I bet a heat gun or hair dryer would fix the sheath right up to accommodate the cord though.

Wish it had some lashing holes or slots to attache other stuff to the sheath. I'll probably still make a kydex for it when I pick them up.

Don't know if its true or not but I heard the new bushman is not as good as the old ones. They changed the steel to something new.. I do have the old bushman and it hold an edge very well. I would feel perfectly good having that knife on me as the only knife.

This is the first one I had, no idea what happened to it. I have owned 8 of these in the past, currently own two standard and one bowie. Still looking for a mini.

Actually, I can tell from the choil this was a bowie I completely changed to make it just like the one I lost, I messed the choil up a bit.
I don't like cord wrapping the handle, it makes it too fat for me and I just don't like how the cord sort of moves sometimes.
Hockey tape or other grip tape is usually what I use.

Sasha, from my research they are and always have been made of SK5, but they are now manufactured in Taiwan, so heat treat is most likely different. They are indeed a bit thinner now, and I do notice a change in quality. The older ones did not have the handle seam welded, it's an easy way to tell.

I asked this question of Cold Steel customer service once and if memory serves they said the Bushman has always been made from SK-5 in Taiwan. The CS '95 catalog introduces them, in SK-5. I have one from that era, but unfortunately the blade does not have any markings of origin.
