So I've had an old school MH in Aus 8 (wish I had on in Carbon V though). Love the knife, I saw that CS now has one coming out in CM3V so I preordered it and just got it in the mail today. That blade tapers from 3/16 to thinner than my Moras. Now I tend to use my knives, I live in the middle of no where and I'm in the woods alot. I use my MH and my BK16 for pretty much anything (its skinned and quartered 3 elk and and a bunch of deer) from dressing to camp chores and some wood workin'. You think this thing will break? A usual trip for me and my buddies is to hike into camp with packs that we soon regret packing, blowing like winded cows, but when we fan out from camp I try to pack light stuff and i dont carry more than my knife and a backup folder. Don't want that blade snapping when im out from camp and building a ground blind or clearing a shooting lane. Think that thin blade will live up to it? My trust in the new master hunter is new a bit skeptical....

3V is one of the toughest steels around, can't believe they would make it too thin to work. Just don't pry with it.

CPM 3V is regarded as a pretty tough steel. Definitely tougher than AUS8.

I would say the more likely contributing factor to any knife breakage you may experience would be your own actions. In other words, if you do something that causes a CPM 3V blade to break, pretty safe bet that the blade would have also broken if it was made from any other steel. Obviously there are exceptions.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding your question.
Are you saying that the AUS8 version of the MH has different blade dimensions than the 3V version...? If not, then the 3V version should be much less likely to break.

Yeah, the AUS8 does not have the taper along the spine... it remains 3/16 to almost the very tip where the new CM3V starts to taper from 3/16 at the handle all the way to the tip leaving a very thin profile for most of the blade length

Since it is designed as a hunting knife, I would think thin would be better. But thin 3V in an all around woods knife is also much more useful to me. Unless the heat treat is wonky, that blade should be up for all the standard woods use you can throw at it. I am actually happy to hear it is thinner as 3/16ths on that short of a blade is to thick in my opinion anyway. I look forward to receiving mine as well!

If you could post a couple comparison pics, I'm sure everyone would be interested. Perhaps the heavy distal taper is not ideal for your uses.

I just received my 3v master hunter today. Blade is def different than my San Mai version. It tapers down to tip where as the San Mai is thick most of the way to the tip. I think the thinner taper of the 3v will work a little better. I do have a question. Does the top of your blade spine sit flush with the top of the grip? Mine does which is also different than the San Mai version. The handle comes up higher than the blade spine on the SMIII. Wonder if my 3v is messed up? The 3v is wicked sharp out of the box.

The spine is flush with the handle and it's the same on my CM3V and AUS8. The CM3V has a slight belly through out the entire length, up to where the main belly starts where the AUS8 is flat until the belly starts. Means that the new one is slightly too fat to fit in my old style sheath

To note though, it seems I like "bush-crafty" type knives... drop or spear point 4-5" blade, slightly thicker stock. I am really not a bush-crafty guy though. Showed the scouts how to do it the hard way, then showed them a Bic lighter, a tent (I like hammocks actually) and a down sleeping bag make things a bit more enjoyable.

I do not have a 3V MH.But both my Carbon V MH and my Sanmai MH have blade spines that line up flush with the top of the kraton handles.

Thanks Beepy. The pics are helpful. Your 3v looks like mine where the top of the blade comes into the grip. I can actually snag my thumbnail on the blade spine moving from the grip to the blade. Yours looks similar. I also noticed your black coating is not even. Mine is not even either. Parts of the blade are darker than others. Quality control must be lacking a bit at CS theses days. Over all, I think I'll enjoy the 3v version...I just wasn't expecting it to be so different from my San Maii knife. The 3v blade definitely has more belly than my San Mai model. I think I like that aspect of the 3v.

No problem guys

Hey Big Bo... got your email... can't send one back cause your settings don't allow you to accept emails...

Sounds like the new 3V version is just like my old carbon V version.

Strong taper
Lots of belly
Spine not flush with the handle

I can't wait to get a new one :)

Fallkniven S1

So doing some research as I have not seen a Carbon V MH in many years... it seems that the Carbon V had the same taper from the handle to the tip. Wonder why they did this with carbon steel models and kept the non tapered spine for the stainless models....

I love the fallki but man... I just can't take it out to use it without feeling guilty. Now if the world was ending, that's the one I'd probably take :)

Yep. Looks like CS was trying to make the new 3v like the old carbon v.....not a bad thing I guess.

Beepy I have an F1 and A1 and agree with you about feeling guilty using them. They are awesome knives..

It looks like ColdSteel is taking advantage of 3vs toughness by thinning down the blade some. That is very encouraging, I already liked the San Mia version, the 3v looks awesome.
For those who have both, is there any difference in thickness at or behind the edge? That's where it counts!
