New custom knife from Brian Andrews

I am truly glad you like the knife. That is all I can really ask for.

Also, thank you all for the kind comments :)

A lot of makers will finish a handle by polishing it by hand. While this can look stunning, I have found that with a real user knife it pays to have a little traction. Along with the specs I requested, I asked Brian to leave the canvas micarta as unfinished as possible. So yes, it provides a better grip. It feels along the lines of the canvas on an ESEE but with some real body to it.

It is interesting that this has come up. Because I recently started doing the super high polish on my wood handled knives. Like this:

Something I possibly should have been doing sooner, but you learn as you go ;) I am considering doing it to micarta as well (more like a bark river micarta finish), but am on the fence. I guess the best option would be to offer both polished and non-polished. But, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Just so that nobody gets mislead, my lead time is not a couple weeks ;) 500 was on my list for awhile. As he got close, we had him send in his template. By the time it got here, I started work on it the same day, and his knife got turned around quick. It probably seemed fast, but unfortunately I am not getting people stuff in 2 weeks at the moment :grumpy: Wish I could do that!

Brian, I would say that giving the option is the way to go. The more choices offered, the more involved and personally connected you feel as the customer. I remember getting really excited every time I would look at the bottom of the page on your website at the options offered. As for handles, I have had a couple slips with wet bark rivers. (my own fault) It has since been my personal preference to have a little traction.

options are good. the "right" finish will depend on what someone wants it gor, how they'll be using it and where, plus personal experience.

the only potential problem with offering options is that some people don't seem to be able to make up their minds... i've heard some makers describe the multiple changed they've gotten on some orders. i can understandthat if a maker introduces a new style or if a customer sees something new that they hadn't seen before, but otherwise, umm... it shouldn't be that hard to figure out what you want.

thanks for clearing up the timeframe. i was wondering if you were short on work! good to see you're not, even if it means an order will take a while.

Looks like a practical design and well executed. Handle looks comfy. Brian does nice work.
