New Delica 4, rough opening and finish

I lost my 3 year old FFG Delica 4 on a recent hike (right after losing my mini grip—not having a good month!), and I ordered a replacement that arrived today. My previous Delica had an incredibly smooth opening action, but the new one is much harder to open. If I open it with my thumb and forefinger it is rough and jerky, but if I use my thumb on the hole I can actually hear a grinding noise. I also noticed the hole itself is very poorly finished. Is this acceptable these days, or should I ask for a replacement? I am pretty bummed because my last Delica was perfect :(

I know the Delica needs a solid break in period. And grit will flush away with some washing. But I'll be darned about that hole, I've never seen anything like that.

I too recently had a new Delica 4 that was the same in both stiff opening and the machine marks on the hole. I ended up gifting it thinking they were just like that (I was disappointed after all the delica hype).

It came from S&R Knives up here in Ontario, which is the same place I got my previous one back in 2013. I have a decent collection of folders and understand they can be a little rough out of the box, but this is like night and day compared to my last one as I received it. I loved that knife so much I went back three times to look for it before I finally caved and ordered a new one.

The hole finish thing is pretty odd. I looked around for people talking about "rough" Spyderco holes and couldn't find anything similar. I also wonder if they missed a polishing step at the factory. It's weird because the edge of the hole is nicely chamfered, it's just the rest of it that looks hideous.

I've had maybe 5 delicas and have never encountered a hole that looked like that.

Both my purple delica and my kahr model have those tool marks inside. However all my salts and persistence are smooth inside. Could it be a vg-10 thing?

They're cut out with a plasma cutter, here is a shot of the inside of a SB, smooth as a baby's behind.

same here, my vg-10 enduras and manbug are just like that, both my Ti damascus endura have some machining marks as too, but on my sb endura and delica they are noticeably less visible.

I had never noticed these in years of handling my first frn vg-10 endura lol

So on a few of mine there are concentric lines that look like stacked paper so all parallel.

On another VG10 Delica I can't see any lines but there's a tiny burr I can just feel inside the hole that must be from the cutter's start/stop. I can't feel it when opening the knife though.

My new VG10 Dragonfly has one swirl all the way around the hole as well as what appears to be plasma cut stripes abound. Doesnt affect the opening or feel though.uploadfromtaptalk1460250642498.jpg

Wow, all of those look unfinished. Any spyderco I have has the distinct dark ring in the middle or it's smooth.

My VG10 Sabre Grind E4 hole is also like that. The grittiness of pivot will go away with use, or try flushing out using WD 40.

My SB & HAP 40 E4 hole doesn't have those crossing lines. All concentric circles only, if any lines are there. Mostly none.

Edit to add: curious, I checked. None on my 2 Resilience, GB1, nor Pac Salt.
So concluded only the E4 SG VG10 has exactly same marks. I'm not bothered by that though.

Dan,

My SB & HAP40 are exactly like that, smooth.

My delica 4 and dragonfly 2 both look like that. I wonder if those machine marks could be easily polished out to be smooth. Any suggestions on a procedure to do that would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting... I've never noticed the marks inside the hole before. I checked both my Delica and DF4 and... yep, marks.

I just checked mine with the action so rough I never use it, and yep, the spydie hole is rough. I hadn't ever noticed that...

mine looks like that too, cuts like a dream, opens real smooth, and pops bottle tops like any good knife should.
Check out the frn too. Nice big scratches in it :P
