New Delica 4, rough opening and finish

My delica 4 and dragonfly 2 both look like that. I wonder if those machine marks could be easily polished out to be smooth. Any suggestions on a procedure to do that would be greatly appreciated.

What about finding a dowel a hair smaller than the hole and wrapping sandpaper around it to smooth it out?

I loosened up the pivot a little and it feels a lot better now. Still kind of scratchy. The hole is actually more of a problem than I originally thought, because the edge isn't really chamfered very well, and I can feel the roughness every time I use my thumb to deploy the blade.

You guys will never believe what happened today. So I was out for a hike as usual...

Oh hey, what's that?

My missing Delica!

It turns out I wasn't even looking in the right forest! It's been out there on the trail for over a week, but it was covered with snow until today, and I was there at just the right time. I was even sitting there on the log for a little while yesterday, which I guess is how I lost it in the first place. Got it all rinsed out with some hot soapy water and it's as good as new. I was apparently remembering it with slightly rose-tinted glasses since the hole is still roughly finished like many examples here (but with parallel grind marks), and the blade isn't completely centred, but the deployment is buttery smooth.

Guess I have two Delicas now since S&R Knives apparently doesn't take returns :grumpy:

Nice!

For the new one you could send in or just get a de-burring tool and clean it up in a few passes.

Nice!

I don't think Spyderco chamfered the holes, as it is meant to be sharp so that even wet/slippery, the edge of the hole provides adequate traction for opening.

About the action, it'll definitely smooth out with plenty of use. Have you tried flushing it with WD40? It'll help getting rid of the burrs, gunks, etc. between the moving parts. You have a good back up knife now! :D

I have a relatively new green Delica, and I just went and looked at the hole, and mine is rough too. The opening is smooth, only the hole is rough.

I have a Delica that bought used with really rough action. Apparently it had sand in it and NO washers. I bought it some new washers that I polished, cleaned everything inside and out real good and then pimped it. Works super smooth. Flips open very easy. It's a favorite knife. I see mine also has those same tooling marks in the hole but mine are so subtle it's a non issue for me. Never would have noticed if I hadn't bumped into this post. I am curious why all you that have rough action haven't mentioned taking the knife apart polishing the washers, cleaning all surfaces and using a good oil or grease?

Because taking apart voids the warranty, and if knife is new, without defects, some good flushing and oil will smooth it out. Your case is special (missing washer, etc.) so a DIY approach definitely is the best thing to do.

Would loosening all the screws off , but not taking it apart void the warranty .
I loosened mine off to aid in flushing it out . It worked a treat .

It's not that they look for it being tampered with, they ask you not to disassemble it because too many people have sent a bag of parts and asked for the knife to be assembled and fixed under warranty.

That's awesome. Had to brighten up your day!
