New Delica/Endura?

Has anybody heard anything of changing the VG-10 in the Delica(and Endura)? Maybe a even of a Delica 5?

I've come down with some hard Delica/Endura fever lately. Such a great design. I love Spydercos backlock, the slim FRN scales with the solid steel liners, just the whole package really.

But the VG-10 is a bit boring(in lack of better words..) and the ZPD-189 gives me some concerns regarding corrosion resistance and thoughness, at least in my mind. I'm sick of chasing long lost exclusives and sprint runs, if I really like a knife I want to be able to replace it without to much fuzz. This keeps me from getting another one(have a ZPD Delica).

I think the design of both the Delica and Endura deserves better after all these years of faithful service.

On one hand, it's a total bummer to lose/destroy an exclusive/sprint that is impossible to replace at a reasonable cost... I even purchased a second (actually three, but I sold one) Delica Wharncliffe in HAP40 because it's my all-time favorite knife and I'm terrified of losing it.

On the other hand, sprint runs and exclusives gives me the opportunity to try out all kinds of steels I would have never known about or been able to afford. I'll take the trade-off personally. :)

I haven't heard any rumblings about Spyderco changing the steel up for the Delica or Endura... Or coming out with a newly designed Delica, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Spyderco switch to their new SPY27 steel for the Delica and Endura if the cost is reasonable (which it seems to be judging by the cost of the upcoming SPY27 Mule Team).

SPY27 would be a fantastic upgrade on these knives, I imagine sales would go through the roof!

View attachment 1339986 I am enjoying the the new teal Endura with the S30V blade.

That is soooo cool!! I ordered the same knife early sunday morning. Some late night halfdrunk shopping right there..:D

Turquoise is one of my favourite colors, so in addition to haven the upgraded S30V steel it was a nobrainer.

It will be my first Endura and I'm very curious on how I will like the size of it. But I can tell I already love the blade shape..

Unless you live in a very corrosive environment where things rust easily, I wouldn't be too concerned about the corrosion resistance of ZDP-189

EDCi is a food safe product that's inexpensive. Even your "stainless" knives need EDCi from time to time to prevent spots and rust.

Flitz is another good product but despite what it says, seems to have a mild polishing abrasive. Not only can this stuff make your blade look amazing, it will remove discoloration, and also protect.

A little drop of KPL or Nano Oil will keep the internals protected.

Dont be scared of non-stainless unless it will be used in a salt water environment.

In terms of its durability, there certainly are steels that are much stronger, however mostly its unneeded overkill, especially for a slicer.

ZDP-189 has proven itself on folders.

K390 is coming out for the Dragonfly, Delica, Endura, Stretch, and I'm not sure which others.

K390 vs ZDP-189... I'd say K390 has a touch better edge retention and ZDP-189 is a bit more corrosion resistant. They will both chip if you whack the edge against something like cement.

I own both, use both, and like both.

Not sure about a 5 version, but I’ve settled on the Delica 4 in terms of collecting different steels and I’m loving it. Definitely will pick up a K390 Delica.

Does anyone know if ZDP-189 is being discontinued from the Seki lineup and being replaced by K390, or will both steels be available going forward?

Edit: I just ordered a ZDP Endura just in case.

I'm just getting a little baffled when I see ZPD rusting more than M4 i some tests..

I like to know that the blade can stand up to acids from fruits and stuff leaking in between liners and blade.

ZDP-189 is used extensively in higher end kitchen knives.

Through normal and responsible use, I'd expect discoloration and patina, but not rust.

As long as you're cleaning the knife after your done, it should be just fine.

Just use Flitz and EDCi as needed. You should be doing this on "stainless" blades too because they also can rust.

It's not the blade itself that worries me most, it's the pivot area. Where you can't see it very well if there is a problem developing. And if you've ever taken a Delica apart you know it's a bitch to reasemble. You basically need a third hand..

Kitchen knives doesn't have a pivot as we all know, so not much of a problem there. Still my main kitchen knife is stainless SG2, because I don't want to wipe down my knife all the time. I just rinse it, shake off the worst off the water in the sink, and hang it right back up. No worries.

What is EDCi?

Aegis Solutions Knife Care EDCi Every Day Corrosion Inhibitor.

They claim that its food safe.

It seems to lightly bond with the surface of the steel and provides a protective barrier.

In terms of the pivot area, if you want to avoid disassembly, use a couple of drops of 85 weight Nano Oil on both sides of the pivot. This heavier weight lubricant will stick around better than the typical 10 weight and should offer sufficient protection while it's there.

Not sure where you are seeing this happening, my ZDP Delica is stainless after hard use on a construction site. Meanwhile my Manix M4 AND my Native 5 rusted like crazy starting around the pivot area when I first got them (I clean them a LOT more now).

Cerdric and Ada channel on ytube. I think he left the blades 2 hours in seawater level salty water.

The ZDP rusted more than M4.

Is it to heavy to apply to a pivot without dissasembly?

No.

Like KPL and Nano Oil 10 weight, the 85 weight has a little needle that you use to place a drip exactly where you want. Open the knife half way and find a point where you can get the needle deep into the pivot.

1 or 2 drops per side is all that you need.

Use gravity to your advantage while opening and closing the knife to work it into the pivot area. Use a q-tip to clean up all excess otherwise it will just retain dirt and pocket lint.

I have a Stretch 2 in ZDP-189. It’s an awesome blade, but in my use it had rusted on the blade and pivot. Not a big deal, but you may want to maintain the blade once in a while.

I agree with the Endura/Endela/Delica line up being awesome. They are solid performers and carry in the pocket very well.

If you use it daily you’ll always be aware of the condition. I have the zdp Endura for a year now and live 1.5 miles from the beach. It has shown some light orange at times, no patina for me. I have some soft abrasive pads and it comes right off. Just don’t leave it in a bucket of saltwater and you’ll be fine.

ZDP is a very special steel that Hitachi has been making for the past 20+ years. With 3% carbon and 20% chrome, the formation of chrome carbides reduced the effect of the Chrome. But there is really nothing in the blade world quite like it.
