There's a few "family resemblances" to The Outsider but it's a totally different concept, speed instead of smashing power. The grip is far more compatible with FMA practices yet you can "clench down" on the "trigger" and do a more "Western" approach grip.

It's really a radical re-think of the subhilt.

Jim,

Open to suggestions? I like the design a lot, and if you want to send me one, please do. Is there any way to perhaps have the blade length up to 12"? I'm also wondering if there's a way to make the back part of the guard a bit closer to the handle? That may defeat the hand protection a bit, but maybe not.

Who's going to make it for us?

Well...if you bring the upper guard back towards the grip, it eliminates supporting the spine with the off-hand palm. And that's what would allow you to block a heavy incoming attack.

That whole idea needs more thunking. I hope Bram and Donna will chime in...

As to length, it can be built in any blade length between 5" and 12", no prob.

The construction type is similar to what Ernie Mayer often does with his upper and lower guards, where the tang, guards and blade are all one piece of 1/4" stock and then ground to outline. Pictures of Erne's work can be seen at: http://www.syspac.com/~bcloud/

Harald Moeller could clearly do it, but he said a year ago he was retiring soon...I'd have to check his status. Alan Folts could too. It's not all THAT complex a design, nowhere near as crazy as The Outsider

.

Let's talk about the design first. If it gets that far, we could put it out for bid, with different price ranges for 5", 7", 9" and 12" for example.

I think it's pretty cool, or at least has potential.

I hope this is not what you have in mind for a HORDE knife, I think its way too modern looking and too"Mideast". I still feel a damascus dagger would be the thing, something more in line with bootknife styling.

Damn !
It looks a lot like something I have been thinking about.
Not mad on prominent subhilts and the bottom guard seems a bit extravagant....but it would, probably, work for me.....good one.

I dunno, the design would have to be refined a little bit. I guess I just don't really like the CS Schimitar/Boker SuperLiner style handle butt.

Is it double edged?

Yeah! Drop the chalupa...

VERY double edged.

The pommel is the part I'm least happy with. Needs work.

The radical lower guard is so the forefinger can be straightened and still be protected, plus provide blocking ability. Could be a tad more graceful...hmmm...

Hi Jim,

Interesting concepts. The upper guard idea looks a little worrisome to me. It is hard to get the live hand into such a small spot, quickly, and if you miss, the penalty looks pretty high. Maybe just flatten out the guard in that area, and only sharpen half or so of the top edge? Looks like the knife is going to be pretty much forward grip oriented, so maybe sharpening the top edge all the way be to the handle wouldn't be all that useful.

IMHO, a long, sharpened clip, like on a bowie, would be better. Make the pommel a skull-crusher, and the handle out of neoprene, like on the REKAT Hobbit Warrior. That's a really secure grip, and given the finger-grip ridges, it wouldn't be hard to modify the concept to include a subhilt.
