New Design - My Pocket Knife Replacement

For awhile, I have been wanting a 3 finger style knife for either my front pocket, or neck carry. I kind of prefer to have it in my front pocket, and I have come to prefer a small little fixed blade to a folder.

I finally got a chance to grind out over the past couple days.

The steel is O1. Red G10 with black liners. Thickness is 1/8" and I decided to do a convex grind on this one. I was kicking around doing a flat grind, but maybe on the next one.

To say that I am happy about the way it turned out, would be a HUGE understatement.

Well, here it is:

Fit and finish-wise, I think this is my best knife ever. I have been really working on the small, but oh so time consuming details!

To give you a sense of scale of this knife, it is with a Bark River Mikro.

And, how it was designed to sit in the hand.

While playing with it, I found that moving the fingers up provides a really cool grip for really detailed stuff. You still use 3 fingers on the handle, just the lower 3 now.

And of course it is sharp : )

Any thoughts? Ideas? Changes?

I have been giving a 3 finger knife some thought..I had the idea that a small turn in the handle..or round swell, on the back of the spine, near the butt, might add to the grip in the reverve grip...I dont think it would add a hot spot, due to the overall size and function of a small knife. I also think that swells or contours in the slabs would improve grip.
I like your design. Looks good.

Brian - I really love the look of that willow leaf shaped blade. Then again, my tastes seem to be going that direction more and more lately. Also, I really like how the choil becomes integrated with the handle. Looks like a great little design. I was surprised that it is even shorter than the micro!

very nice! +1 on the "make more". Any ideas for the pocket sheith? That is a need that I havent seen here. Closest is the AG "woodswalker" and I think that is for the hip pocket use.

Yes! Make one in green and send it to me for indefinite evaluation. :D j/k

That's one sweet design and it looks like it has a ton of utility in a small package. The modified thumb-on-flat grip alone makes it an ultra-versatile knife.

Thanks for the link. Just got my first micro from another member here and I think I will give a try to make one in leather. If it turns out wrong, I know where to turn.

That's pretty nice Brian  I love the red G-10.

I do still carry a folder mostly but that general size is what I go for when I am EDC'ing a fixed blade. I had JRE make up a couple of pocket sheaths with clips for me for my BHK's. They're awesome. As convenient as carrying a folder with a clip IMO.

Nice work, Brian!:thumbup::thumbup:

I am "sold," based on kmowing your understanding of cutting tools and the thoughtful consideration givien to functinal details evident in you write-up. I am glad you shared this because I think we all benefit from your research and experimentation. Coming here for input and feedback allows us (WSS members) an opportunity to learn someting as well as offer our two-cents' worth.

All,
I have recently handled a knife Brian made and I have to say that he really does pay attention to details - functional details as well as aesthetic details.

I personally am interested in learning more about Brian's ideas. Here, we have another WSS-member materializing things we are looking for - whether we know what we are looking for or not.

Thanks Jeff for the comments and feedback.

What's the OAL/Blade length?

Sorry, didn't mean to ignore this one. From choil to tip is 2 1/8" from the front of the handle slabs to tip is 2 3/8". The OAL is 4 3/4".

That is the first time I took measurements. I drew and it re-drew it based on what I thought would work, without dimensions in mind.

anither winner! scandi would be nice, but for that size i think convex will be just as well. looks dan farmer-ish with some aspects of the barkie.

Thanks Brian.
The handle reminds me of Tom Kreins stuff. Very nice.

Edit:
looks dan farmer-ish
I agree as far as the blade is concerned.

Hmmm... a Krein handle on a Farmer blade. Not the worst thing that could happen. :D

Nice work Brian.

I really like the shape of the blade and the handle.

It looks like a very functional small knife. :D

How could you not be stoked with how it came out? That is a beauty!!!

I love the blade shape, I hope you plan on producing a lot more of these.

I've been meaning to get started on a small "necker/3finger" myself, this gives me lots of motivation. Thanks.

That looks like a brilliant EDC. Well done! I'm a fan of the choil - normally, they aren't my thing, but on a small utility knife, they give you some great grip options.

I use a little three-finger scandi as my EDC knife, and it seems like the ideal size for most everyday cutting jobs.

I would love to see more knives with similar dimensions on the market.

All the best,

- Mike

I love it. You have a nac for designing knives.
