New Design - Tests - Questions (9 pics)

That is a good point. If you've already got a place to comfortably choke up, why not just bring the edge back to that area. A lot of things to think about for "Proto II." :)

And of course, a crappy photoshop pic of what that would look like:

Of the options mentioned, my preference would be for a flat grind, open choil, and clip point, but maybe raise the tip slightly and give the blade a bit more belly. Will the finished knife have grip panels or will it be left as is ready for a para-cord wrap?

Thanks fellows -- the next ones will be available with either a Japanese-style cord wrap, or with some "treebark" textured g-10 scales that I'm working on.

Here are some pics of the "finished" proto w/ OD gun-kote and a wrap. Some pics show some crappy drawings of how some of the next ones will look. I will definitely bulk up the back end, but still unsure about that choil.

Cord wrap is a bad idea for a blade used for wood working, sap on the hands means sap on the cord = skin missing from the grip. With and solid grip you can just scrub this off aggressively with dirt/sand and then rise it.

One suggestion if you go with a smaller choil like in the drawing. blend it a bit into the edge side so that instead of a sharp U shape you get a smoother transition into the cutting edge. This should prevent the big complaint about choils causing fabric or whatnot to hang up the blade.

I soak my cord-wrapped blades in West Systems epoxy and so far haven't had any problems with sap on any of my personal knives. I'll still offer it with a wrap, but I guess that is something folks will have to take into consideration.

Thanks again fellows for the design suggestions!

Thank you very much -- :) Got a new bandsaw blade in last night (about time) and cut out Proto II The handle is a bit more curved and has a larger back end for comfort. I'll have to do some chopping after grind and H/T to see if it creates a hotspot. The balance point is set so you can comfortably do close work with choking up as it is, so the added front choil is mainly aesthetics. Any thoughts? Leave it, or go with the extra choil?
