New drawknife, help identify

Putting the drawknife through the paces today. Got a piece of pecan and am going to try and make a hatchet handle. Some tough stuff, but it seems to be holding an edge well. Handles are fine for now.

Uh oh, looks like I got a live one! Wood borers in this billet, but looks like they are fairly fresh to this chunk, not going very deep, lots of grubs in it. A little more hewing and shaving should get past it.

Just one little hole is all that's left at one end, that will be the butt. Working through this billet makes me long for a hewing hatchet, all I have is my 3.5# mexican full size axe and a cheap little tomahawk. The rest of mine need handles, so I might as well just push on through the pain in my hands and forearms to get this done.

I like the fact that people can be interested in state-of-the-art technology like a Carbon Fiber Orbea bicycle and STILL appreciate a 100+ year old draw knife. :)

This is the reason I joined this forum, computers and lazers in every home and a firm respect for the world before either was thought of......we are special kind of people.

I whole heatedly agree! Most of my friends are bike people. I think I'm the only one with an axe, let alone 30 of 'em. I like you guy's.

Some after work therapy, more shaving with the drawknife! I can honestly say I am enjoying this! I know I am doing much more work with the knife than I should, but I'm still trying to get a feel for one of these things and the fact that this tool is at least 138 years old really is the coolest part! My house was built in 1920, I like to think that this tool could have been used in this garage almost 100 years ago and it is still going strong today just as if it were new.

The shaving pile is growing...

The billet I chose has a slight bit of twist to it, but no real runout. The right side of frame is the but of the handle. It should be absolutely perfect for my little 1.25# hatchet with a hamon. This billet is just a hair over 15" long, bout perfect for a 22oz head I recon.

A nice side effect of using a draw knife is I get to keep warm on this cold night of 28*F(a hipster of rum sure helps too!)
