Hey, Im quite young and haven't been making knives for that long, but before I have been going to my cousins house who has a drill press which I can use to drill the pin holes however he lives far away so it is not convienient and Im interested in buying a pillar drill for other things not just knives but was wondering whether i could drill through 3mm tool steel with this roughly https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cla...MACKpzMPM2rFF-pXs2xGIAb85-6NkfLz0MaAuQw8P8HAQ

Many Thanks

That'll work Depending on where you live, you might also check the local classifieds for something around that size, or preferably a little bigger. That said, when buying a used drill press, you need to make sure you know what you're getting.

Yes
I have nearly that identical drill press. I bought it used thirty years ago. Still works great. I have since bought a big O floor model but it is nice to have more than one. Even if you upgrade later you will still use the little one.

Be sure the table and base are cast iron not aluminum. Some recent drill presses have been coming out made with aluminum and that is kind of weak. If you look at used ones take a magnet with you. If a magnet sticks to the table (obviously) then it is cast iron or steel (not aluminum).

Learn to prepare the hole locations properly (by the book) including a pilot hole and you can drill through surprisingly thick or tough material with that little drill press. Sharp quality bits are everything.

Cropped from an old larger photo the drill press was in the back ground.

It just so happened that the big drill press table is in the fore ground on the left and it almost looks like the little one is sitting on that drill press table.

The drill bit does the work the drill press drives the drill bit
I have a drill press app. the same size and price. It works fine, but get some cobalt drill bits and cooling fluid (and safety glasses!)
Drill bits are way cheaper on line. (search for Co drill bits)

Thanks all, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time and ending up having to send it back or sell it on which would of been especially bad with postage cost of something this big and heavy. Thanks,

Josh
