New Driving Law in Colorado - Bah!

Yesterday our Guv'ner signed a new bill into law that makes it illegal for a new driver under 21 to carry any passenger in their car who is also under 21 for the first 6 months of their license. For the next six months, they are allowed one passenger under 21.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. Now two high school boys can't ride to basketball practice together. Two 17 year old girls can't go to the mall together.

To boot, today the same guv'ner made a plea to our state to please carpool and find other ways to conserve gas.

Grrr.

my town has somethign like that because we have 2 highschools in my town but our rule is the driver plus 2 or school days 1 on weekends....it was enforced very weakly because if a 17 year old got pulled over being in suspition of breaking this law then he complained to the police station.....the kids always find loop holes we did....some times it does help to be a tatle tail..... :D :D

I am a 5th generation Native Coloradan and I pulled up and left in 1973 when it quit being a western state. Civilization just sort krept in and pulled a coup.

Most of the rest of the Rocky Mountain states are still real.

South Park is the literal truth.

That's more liberal than Californias law.

Doesn't mean it's going to be enforced much.

WTF!!?!

I don't think that one will last long.

Musta been that John Denver song...

It started in the 50s and 60s with midwesterners. Then the Texans started a mass migration in the 70s and the Californicators in the recent past.

Of course Californication is happening heavily in the Pacific Northwest and Montana these days too.

Obviosly it's to keep a whole car full of teenagers dying at once. WHich is a fairly regular occurence around here. It Probably also is an attempt to limit gang bangers and drug buying trips.

Of course parents could raise responsible kids but that not as common any more.

We have similar laws here in CT, but I don't recall seeing any documentation that shows it's doing any good.

Statistically new drivers are a lot more likely to get into accidents when other teens are in the car too. Don't know if it's enforcible, but it seems like a good idea to me. It's only for six months anyway, the most critical time for new drivers.

"The per capita death rate for all Americans, of any age, in 2003 was 14.9 per 100,000.

The death rate for male drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 years old, meanwhile, is 48.2 per 100,000. The rate for young males in the above age group is therefore 3.2 times greater than for the average person."

"More than 2500 children under 15 were killed in auto accidents [in the USA] in 2003."

15-20 Year-Olds Killed in Automobile Crashes in the USA:

1999: 6,378
2000: 6,434
2001: 6,442

Colorado:

1999: 93
2000: 84
2001: 115

I believe that is just an urban myth. :D

I was stuck in SoCal for 12 years. :barf:

I like New Mexico MUCH better! :D

Maximus- that is fine , the statistics are real and they are ours - the brits do a great job of protecting themselves from themselves with all the gun and knife laws they have, no one is ever the victim of bad stuff there huh... I am sure the driving laws there are quite strict too so they don't have driving fatalities. It is not the job of the state to protect us from ourselves here- at least it never used to be. Parents have the choice of letting thier kids drive or ride. The problem starts when they are tought that they don't have the right to correct thier kids or tell them who they can hang out with or how to act. Also as an 18 year old we have to register for the draft and maybe even enlist and die for our country. Either eighteen is the age of adulthood or not. Should not have it both ways. Life is full of risks- NO ONE can or should have the self proclaimed right to protect us from ourselves and our own choices.... now I understand that a career in law enforcement and a life in Britain might effect your point of view - but please leave it there, we left that rule once and most of us don't want to go back.... :p Actually I think there should be a rule on the forums that NO foriegner should be able to comment on any of our laws or rights.... but that might just be me but I have seen it too often here and on other forums.

I knew you were perfect!

The law may be "just" but I am sick of a few costing many to pay a price. The left has been doing this in many arena's. For every teen that dies because of the misuse of a vehicle there are many, many more that don't. It further causes the innocent to pay in cost and inconvienience for the actions or potential actions of a few. "but if it saves just one it is worth it" the battle cry that will cost us all more and more.... just turn in your knives and guns now- it may save one life ya know...
