I have been carrying a skyline for the past several years and just managed to lose it. I am in the market for a new blade
Over all, I liked the skyline a lot, but there were a few problems that I would like to see if I can avoid.
First, the blade was a tick thin, and I managed to flex and a later bend the blade ever so slightly doing pretty light work with it. I think I would like a slightly thicker bade or at least a slightly more rigid blade. I don't really pry with it, but some of the heavier cutting using the tip is what put the kink in it.
The other thing is that the shape of the handle wore a hole in all of my rear pockets pretty quickly. I carry it hinge up in the right rear pocket at the outside edge. That pointed handle wore right through the fabric of even my heavier carhartt pants.
I would really like an assisted opener this go. I had a Kershaw blackout that I like for that reason, but I lost it in the pasture somewhere.
I do like liner locks. I like a knife that has the clip way out at the tip so the knife sits as deeply in the pocket as possible.
Things I like about the Skyline:
Blade shape No more pointed than this one and if anything, more belly to the blade on the new one.
Ease of sharpening and good edge retention
Size (but I could be happier with a slightly larger knife, definitely no smaller)
Flatness for carry
Solid clip that held up until the end
Very inexpensive for the quality
clip position options. I would actually like to carry hinge down/point up on the new one. I just never got around to swapping the clip on the skyline to carry like that.
With these things in mind, what suggestions would you have for a replacement? My budget is flexible, but I do tend to really use a knife and sometimes lose them, so a $300 folder is out of the question. $100 is my upper limit unless it is something super special. For some reason I feel more comfortable spending more on a fixed blade than a folder.
Thanks for the help
PS. One I looked at was the Rake, but I do not see it locally available and never got to actually handle one.
