I prefer the plain jane handles, but you can get them with all manner of inlays/graphics if you want to go fancy or get some extra grip.
You can frequently find deals on the exchange for around (sometimes under) the $300 mark, or $350 new. And if you find it's not for you, you can flip them almost immediately and only be out $20-30.

Spyderco all the way, IMO. I'd go after the Sage 1 or the caly 3.
Just-right blade length, grips and easy carry size.
