The knife did a lot of moving because I reprofiled the edge a bit, so the mirror finish isn't there like I want it... But MAN this thing cuts like a laser.

Welcome to the family. Soon you'll start getting the shakes if you go more than a day without using the E.P. Then you'll begin to sharpen every day. Later you'll start asking your friends if you can sharpen their knives. It's a downward spiral from there.

Congrats!

haha so true. EP is amazing fun to use...and the edges...

Thats a nice edge too...I need to get some polish tape. Did you get the glassblank?

I recommend getting 3 or even 4 glass blanks. 3 for the 2k/3k/6k tapes and the last one can be a worn out 6k tape with some dried Mothers Mag polish for super-mirrors.

In all reality a glass blank is probably not needed. The aluminum blank is fine. However.....some of us are perfectionist.......and so we just have to have that extra edge (pun intended) when it comes to equipment. I get so picky that I will measure the thickness of my stones to ensure they are uniform enough to stay on the primary bevel when sharpening!

I love mine. I have only had one issue with a knife so far and that was last night. I have sharpened many knives with no issues until I tried to sharpen a friends cheap Chicago Cutlery chef knife. I was not expecting to get it as sharp as my shun and global blades. However I did think I could get it close to hair popping. It just dont seem to get there. I did not repofile it but still, its soft metal should not be that hard!

Funny, I had the same problem with a Chicago Cutlery Chefs knife.

I did three, and the fourth wouldnt get shaving sharp. I tried it on the Wicked Edge and the Edge Pro as well as the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I actually did reprofile it too.

Im convinced that my particular knife had a bad heat treat. It got sharp, but not hair shaving sharp like the others that were identical to it.

I set this one to 21 degrees.

Hrmm, a question: I got the Apex4 and it came with aluminum blanks. Which setup comes with glass blanks? Are the aluminum blanks fine for the tapes anyway?

I wonder if leather glued on a blank loaded with chrome oxide will work on the EP.

It's been working for me for years. You'd be amazed at what one can come up with for the EdgePro. Chromium oxide, diamond paste, Maas polish... About two years ago, in an EP thread, folks were posting pictures of their home-made EP stones. One fellow had a large bin filled with 'em. Must have been 30-40 different stones and strops.

You have to specify that you want glass blanks when you order, I got 3 with my Apex 4 kit as well as the 6000 tape. I also have .3 and .05 micron lapping film that works nicely on those blanks. You can order glass blanks for $10 from Edge Pro directly.

Holy..something. Don't suppose you remember what the thread was called?

LOL! You must be joking! That was at least a year or two ago. I can't remember the name of a thread from two days ago! But I do remember that it was very picture heavy, with several posters showing huge collections of stones and hones they made for their EdgePro. I remember being surprised as I thought that I had a lot of homemade stuff for mine, but my idea of 'a lot' and their idea of 'a lot' was really different! I have about 10-15 homemade pieces for my EP. Several of these guys had 30-40, or so it looked from the photos!

Where did you get your lapping film. I have been looking on line with very little luck so far

Don't you have any large DIY shops or HomeCenters near where you live. I can get all kinds of film in my area, quite cheap and with grits up to 15,000. The only drawback I run into is that the film I can get doesn't have adhesive backing so I use the tubes of white paper glue (look like large lipsticks) which works perfectly. It doesn't dry out with the plastic films and it washes right off the blanks with plain water, but holds well enough for sharpening.
