A few months ago a new grinder kit was offered in the makers section and the offering went down hill pretty quick. Here is the link to the thread.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=675343

Starting about page nine Chris Williams (blindhog) stepped up and volunteered to produce a set of CAD files from photos of the grinder that had been offered.

After a few mods Chris offered the CAD files on his website.

I found a local water jet guy and had him cut out a couple of the grinder kits for me. He likes knives so we worked out a deal:D

I would like to thank Chris for all his hard work on this project.

I used Bader wheels on this build and an ebay 1 1/2 HP motor and a KB Electronics Drive.

If you would like one of these kits polarbearforge is offering the kits here.

Thanks for looking.

Charles

I noticed you have the original plans before the hole for the work rest. Looks very nice and clean! Where did you get the 6" drive wheel?

This the original EERF grinder design, the one with two tooling arm slots is a variation Jamie at polarbearforge.com came up with. If you go to my website and download blueprints or get cad files it will be the above design.

Charles it looks great, glad to hear you were able to work out a deal on getting the grinder cut. Love the 6 inch Bader drive and tracking wheel on it. Also like the mod to take 1 inch tooling arm.

Chris

Thanks guys

What was your final cost for the machine?

Just a rough idea

$300 water jet work (The quoted price)
$370 KB Drive
$60 New ebay motor
$156 Bader 6" drive wheel
$150 Bader Idler wheel with bearings
$85 Bader 4 1/2" contact wheel I had this already
$8 per Tooling arm
Trampoline spring had some laying around
$40 for bolts knobs and handles

$1169 +- a couple of bucks.

You can get Idler and drive wheels cheaper at Beaumont.

Where did you get a tooling arm like that for $8? It looks like solid 1 1/2" bar that is a little over 2 feet. That is less than $4/ft! Around me I didn't think I could get tubing that size for that cheap!

Chris, I realized it was the orig design because of the lack of the tool rest hole and the height, just making an observation. :p

I used 1" stock for the tooling arm, about 1/3 the price of 1 1/2" stock and it works great.

http://www.metalsdepot.com/

Hot rolled square bar 1" x 1" $7.64 now you have to pay shipping, just get a bunch of stuff you can use in the future and the shipping per piece isn't to bad

I noticed on the Metals depot website if you order the 20 feet (The longest bar size) and have it cut to UPS shippable size you save 25% off the top.

Its still cheaper for me to buy locally but that is a good option if you don't have steel near by.

Mr. Vestal I sent you an email with a couple motor questions when you have the time.

John

Nice job!

Can you give the specifics on the KB and the Motor?

Also, how you picked the sizes of the wheels?

Thanx!

The motor is 3 phase.
the combination of that motor and controller give variable speed

Charles
That's a great motor at a great price !
thanks for the photos, we love tool porn

12345678910 was correct with his links for the controller, Thanks 1-10

The motor is a Lesson 1 1/2 HP 3 Phase C face totally enclosed fan cooled motor.

The drive and tracking wheels are standard on Bader Grinders, I like the looks of the larger wheels so I went with them. If you get your tracking and drive wheels from Beaumont you will save some $$$

Take care

Thanx a lot both of youz guyz!

Another quick question about the wheel sizes.

The reason to have 6-8-10-12-14 inch contact wheels is because they cut different profiles? Is that right?

I was thinking for a killer setup to get both Platens.

The Multi with a 10" and a 4" maybe.

Then get the standard with 2 different sizes Poly Contact wheels, maybe a 2 and a 3".

Can that be done and does that make sense?

That way every wheel would be usable as a flexible and different profile grind point?

Then obviously the SW attachment for the Ultimate variety.

You are not the designer, You are Thiefs. I have waited long enough, now lets make this personel. I desinged this grinder in 2008. I have all the cad drawing, and pictures to prove it plus, knifemakers who bought the grinder. I suggest anyone selling this design, contact me, wilhurley@yahoo.com, or I will take whatever action that I have to take. I never dreamed so many knifemakers who, take pride in orginial designs, steal someone elses, and pass it off as theirs. You all prob steal knife designs also. I think it would be in your best interest to remove the plans and kits from you websites, and maby credit the person who came up with the design. If anyone has anyquestions, feel free to contact me wilhurley@yahoo.com.

That is interesting.

I would think before calling people thieves and threatening legal action, you would need clean hands yourself.

Not real sure what you are talking about as I am the designer of the EERF grinder. Whatever you designed I wish you all the best and many more happy customers. Me I have no customers, I merely give the design away to whomever wants to use it.
Much Love.
CHris W.

PS For those not in the know, you too can have the plans to my EERF grinder.(EERF=FREE spelled backwards) for FREE. Yes I said FREE, I charge nothing and will never charge anything for these plans. I want nothing other than every knifemaker to have one of these grinders and not pay anyone but there local steel cutting shop to make this grinder. Make yours today.
Link below for my EERF-FREE GRINDER.

Aside from the terrible spelling and grammer, we shall look into this. :D

You all prob steal knife designs also.

There are no new knife designs. even the clip point was made in chipped flint/chert before copper/bronze/iron/steel.

or I will take whatever action that I have to take.
Is that with the money you ran off with from Your Customer's and never delivered the product?

I never dreamed so many knifemakers who, take pride in orginial designs, steal someone elses, and pass it off as theirs.

See the Kit Knife thread.

Please point us to your Patent numbers.

Mr. Hurley,
i was set to buy one of your grinders when you were selling "your" design. you disappeared sir! and according to others you also took off with some money. i am not saying that this is true as i do not but i do know that you never responded to that thread and it went on for a very long time, it seems as if you had ample time to deal with those accusations and did not choose to.
i would think it in your best interest to leave well enough alone considering these points.
a. your design is nothing more than a rip of a bader 3. all one has to do is look at the pictures of a bader 3 to see this.
b. until there is closure with those folks who claim that you did not send their grinders or parts, and your reputation on this forums is that of a thief, i find it oxymoronic that you would have the testicular fortitude to accuses any one of theft.
c. if you were worried about "your design" where have you been for over a year?

no one has stolen from you good sir!

Jake
