Hello folks, I'm a new enthusiast. Speaking specifically, I like collecting military knives, that's the knife niche that I belong to, I'm not into pocket knives as I don't have a job or utility work that would require my a pocket knife anyway, though I could see myself chopping wood for campfires, survival and stuff.

I recently just got a Ka-Bar USMC and Ontario SP-1 and I want to review 'em and give people good information about 'em. I'm new, so I need some education about knives for example - parts of a knife, the types of steel used and all that, oh and one I REALLY would like help with - sharpening one. Eventually, if I chop lots of wood it's obviously gonna wear' em out eventually.

Welcome. Start reading. We just did a thread about knife parts and steels right here a couple days ago, and there is a whole subforum here dedicated to sharpening.

Have at it!

Welcome Nusantara and open your wallet... There is a ton of info on this sight.

Both of the knives you mentioned are both 1095 steel. This steel has a good reputation and should serve you well. The only downside is that it is a high carbon and can rust if not taken care of properly. I found it easy to start classifying the steels. In order from bad to good.

- Mystery steels ( one which is not identified by the manufacturer and is pretty much junk)
-Good, yet inexpensive, this steel will be found on cheaper knives from reputable makers. AUS8 is one that comes to mind. Can get a good edge, but may not hold it long
-Better, Good steel that takes a good edge and will hold it. Steels in this category have a good reputation and have been around for a long time. 1095 is in this category
-Super steels, the latest and the greatest. Steels that excel at edge holding and take a very sharp edge. The downside is that they are expensive and may be difficult to sharpen S90v is one that comes to mind.

Then you have to take into consideration useage, stainless(rust resistant) vs high carbon( will rust) both have advantages and disadvantages.

I have jus scratched the surface. There are many threads on the topic. Most of my knives fall into the good or better category.

Sharpening- I use the edgepro apex, google it and check it out, its not cheap, but is also not the most expensive. This is another category that you can go on and on about, hand sharpening vs machine etc.

Welcome and good luck
