Hello all,
I recently made the switch from handmade to fabricated Washboard plates - just too difficult to do by hand, and not a whole lot easier on a mill.

Newer version will be available early/mid August, these are some interim videos till I get some more comprehensive ones made, still have to build up my stock and update the website. I'll also be listing them on the G&G subforum as they become available. Am still providing the older model for now but am encouraging folks to defer delivery so they can get one of the new ones. Pricing will be in the same ballpark.

First video is an overview of the new mounting/base scheme, second is a quick run through with a CS Bolo machete. Filled with tidbits of wisdom and plenty of mumbling, just what you'd expect from one of my videos!

New mounting strategy is a nice upgrade. The newer ones are also larger at 2.625x11 to get more utility from standard sized 9"x11" and 8.5"x11" materials.

Hey Martin...looking good. I've busted the dowels on mine (old system) a couple of times. I also like the slightly larger surface.

Hope you have a deal for those of us who are prior customers and don't need the stuff that you usually ship with the basic unit.

Mike

I'm sure I can break it out a la carte. If interested, I can modify an older block to take the new scheme - in that case would be a charge for shipping and the mod will be free.

Martin

Edit to add: The board and the honing compound are nearly all of the cost. I don't mark up any of the other items, totaled up are less than the shipping rate.

If interested, I keep a supply of the plug in bases and replacement of damaged ones is free of charge.

Thanks Martin...I'll wait till you have these ready to go and then decide what I'll get. Keep up the good work.

Martin - thanks for the videos intro of your new WB. Larger dimension and good shim setup are exactly what I was waiting for. It looks like very versatile multi-abrasive bench stone, except producing a flatter bevel (virtually no convexing - deduced from my use of the current WB).

Once I can buy 1 or 2 or 3 new WB2 - yeah, easier just to grab a pre-loaded grit than looking & switching abrasive sheet. Then, I designate my current WB for more portable uses and possibly experiment (oh no, butchering/sharpen-nutting time) with it.

There were white & grey abrasive chunks shipped with early WB. Current WB ships with a lug of SiC <= is this lug the same of the grey SiC chunk? And this lug will inludes in WB2, right? How big is this lug? Don't worry, I won't waste it by using it as lip balm :p

The slugs of compound are 35grams give or take, so just over an ounce. It is the same formula as the older "spoon" mold compound.

Also comes with a sheet ea of 120, 320, 800 grit wet/dry, a pink eraser, print copy of the new manual, some blank sheets of paper, and of course the board and base wedges. Am hammering away on building stock up, not helped by the wife and kids insisting on something called a "vacation"...

Thanks for details, Martin.

I am willing to wait extra 1 or 2 or 3 weeks for WB2. Unless in the future, there is another Summer of 2015 and everyone going through the same age twice

Hey Martin, Nice improvements on the new board. I bought one last year, guess I need another new one this year, Let me know when you have ample stock. One can not have too many tools, Right?

Hey, even used they make great gifts!
Never too early to start thinking about Xmas...

Very nice, I'm particularly interested in your technique of working away from the edge instead of into or a back and forth motion. I'm a big believer in this technique, both in the sharpening and honing process.

Ultimately when grinding it is far better use of time to use a fore and aft scrubbing motion once familiar. Because the wet/dry has some slight mobility one can finish with a trailing motion to get the best from the materials - like a softer waterstone - particularly at the honing level but for a few passes at any level once the burr is all but gone.

Trailing edge works well enough to be used 100% if comfortable though, and is the fastest way to raise a burr. Also gives 100% continuity of technique start to finish.

These are officially ready to start shipping.

Over the nest week or so I'll be getting back to everyone that expressed interest on an individual basis, this is a general head's-up. I have a bunch on hand and am expecting more shipping materials any day now. They are shipping in tubes which makes it really nice for storage of extra abrasives etc and the board itself if not being used often.

The website is updated with new imagery, vids, pricing, manual.

** ... **

It would be super cool, if you could just toss (a very long one) the package over to my place... no waiting time :D

Just gonna inject a quick review in here.

Got mine a few weeks ago (first one, so can't compare to the original) but am very happy with this so far. The tactile feedback is great. I am currently refining the convex edge I put on roughly with my belt sander on my Old Hickory Butcher knife. It was my first convex grind I did, and def needs refining. Grinding the shoulders a bit now, and working great. Also used just the copy paper and compound to strop my EDC S30V Griptillian and M4 Gayle Bradley. It works great. I really like the versatility and feedback this system has.

For the price, you can't get a more versatile system, that uses readily (and cheaply) replaced sharpening materials, and also supports a fellow forum member that has helped me on my sharpening journey.

In short, buy this.
