I got my oven yesterday!:D Now I have some 1084 1/8" steel that I am going to be using to get the hang of this heat treating biz. I still need to figure out how to use the thing. What I am wondering is a heat treat recipe for the 1084. Once I figure out how it operates, I will need to plug in a program. I have about 12' of this steel so I will store the program for future projects. I know 1084 needs to get up to 1475 to 1500 then quench. How long of a soak period will I need to program. I know as soon as it reads 1500 the blade will probably still be a bit lower in temp. How fast of a ramp and soak time would you fellers recommend? Thanks!

Also is a shelf needed to hold the blade higher in the oven or should the whole oven be at the same temp?

While 1084 ,being the eutectoid, doesn't really need a soak, it is a good practise to soak for 5 minutes. Get a blade rack from TKS or Jantz ( or make one from a fire brick and some stainless wire). It will hold the blades in a vertical position. When the readout says 1500F, everything in your oven is 1500F.

Bring your oven up to temperature and stabilize, then put your blade in [or blades], and let everything return to a stable temperature. And then do a short soak.
