New facial requires new knife

Well, as a fellow Beardian, you will no doubt be opening bottles of strong beer on a regular basis. You'll need a good opener on you. A Victorinox Alox Soldier or Pioneer (with large stainless spear blade for cutting your fruits and cheeses) is the secret handshake of we folk. -Even if you are neat enough to not leave leftovers in your beard.
;)

why do bearded folk need a secret handshake, when their beardedness should be obvious to everyone?:D

As far as knives are concerned, traditionals are perfect for thin slicing tasks, a 110 is maybe a bit stocky for all but the fiercest apples. A longer blade, e.g. GEC Ben Hogan, or 73 works pretty well.

My fruit knife is this Case Sodbuster Jr., sits on my desk, waiting for the next apple. OH

BEER! Well of course....the Pioneer/Soldier (didn't nobody say nuttin' bout no beer).

I'm a beardy. I think you're just making excuses for wanting to carry another traditional. ;)

Eating food without getting it round myself is something I learned when I was a child. :D Eating snacks with the aid of a pocket knife is also something I learned as a child - my father (another beardy) taught me. I still do it today, but I use whatever knife happens to be in my pocket at the time, it makes no difference. Congress, jack, Barlow, whittler, regardless of the pattern or blade shape, if it's sharp, it works.

Honestly my case cv peanuts probably get the most food time. I have carried one in my uniform trouser pockets for a couple of years now and have never lacked for blade length.

Enjoy your tasty carbon bladed aided snacks!

Paul pretty much mirrored what I was about to say, don't know if I'm a true beardy, I stop shaving in August every year and don't shave again until March, but I find any knife works, but in public discretion is key, I've used things like Opinel and Moose, even stockman get strange glances and parents tugging on their kids, the peanut tends to get no second glances, and is plenty suffice, I used my white owl last picking season to make edible portions for my daughter with no strange glances.

PS if you have a thick mustache like me habanero wings can be really painful, the burn just keeps on coming

The Radio Jack is working pretty well for me here. Feels a bit more old school (to my aesthetic sense) than the Vic.

I recommend a trapper.
Just about perfect size, at around 4" closed.
Clip blade for utility chores, and makes a nice steak knife.
Spey blade is great for food, as its rounded tip makes it excel at spreading things like peanut butter and mustard.

Case makes a great one, GEC makes a very nice one albeit a little smaller at 3.75", Queen does a trapper.... pretty much every cutler makes or has made a trapper at one point.

Here's my Case, for example. CV (carbon) steel, chestnut bone handle covers. Love this knife.

I'll add my vote to the Slimline Trapper style of knife (see GEC 48 and Queen Cutlery's Utility in D2) Plenty of blade, lightweight and not expensive. The CASE version is in many ways the best for the money.

Another plus point, its long blade shape gets very keen and when you or fashion get fed up with that beard....will double up as a tidy cut-throat razor:D:)

Yeah. This beard fad is getting old.

Well basically I have a full beard now....

So I put it to you all.... Thoughts and recommendations please :)

Keep your mustache trimmed, take a little more care, and... wait, what's the problem? How do you end up with apples and cheese everywhere? Maybe I don't want to know.

Meanwhile, get yourself a knife you really, really like. No matter what, that's always the right answer. :)

Oh I forgot to say in my post last night, with the opinel's I would suggest the stainless steel blade for your application

What is it with all you old guys and beards? Is it that when ya get old your eyesight goes and your afraid to bring a sharpened edge near an artery that could let you bleed out if you nick it or is it lazy like me who in 40 years of facial hair shaved clean maybe 4 times. I grew a beard at 15 to hide a scar that went across my from riding my face down a hill after falling off the handle bars of my buddies Schwinn Orange Crate 5 speed chopper bicycle.

Once for a job, (didn't get it)

Once for court, (didn't help they still identified me)

Once to freak my new wife out who'd never seen me hairless before, (freaked her out and she wouldn't sleep with me till I at least had the scruffy face look 2 days later)

Last time was about a year or so ago when I lost 150lbs and was curious to see what I looked like the last time I shaved when I was still young and good lookin' back in the 80s when I got married. (Shoulda learned from before the wife wouldn't let me into bed till I grew it back again over the weekend)

Never again, never again but if I pick a traditional for dual purpose I'd pick my old 80s Frost Cutlery one armed razor knife.

I like a trapper. Clip for cutting, spay for spreading.

You can get the same effect with a doctor’s knife. The spatula blade makes a decent butter knife.
